In the News: FRUA Scholarship Awarded to Naperville, IL Senior

Physics/Mathematics Major Chosen as Recipient

Families for Russian and Ukrainian Adoption (FRUA) is proud to announce that Matthew Camp of Naperville, Illinois, has been selected to receive its annual college scholarship in the amount of $1,500.

Matthew came from Ukraine to live in the United States in 1993 at six months old. A natural problem solver, Matthew is excited to study physics and mathematics as a double major in college. His goal is to be a high school physics teacher so he can teach students that there are different ways to solve a problem. Matthew will begin his freshman year at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, this fall.

According to Matthew, he values representing and advocating for the adoption community, such as mentoring and tutoring a 4th grade boy adopted from Russia and contributing to an Adoption Today magazine article. In his scholarship application essay, Matthew noted about tutoring the adopted boy, “I understand what he is going through; I can relate to him and help him with different strategies when people make fun of him for being adopted.”

A strong math student, Matthew received the Most Outstanding Student Award in 2010 at Elmhurst College Summer Academy for Mathematics and Science and an Excellence in Chemistry Award in his high school sophomore year. Matthew was also a Student Activities Photographer for his high school and has had several photographs chosen for publication in his high school Literary and Art Magazine.

In addition to Matthew’s strong academic and photography skills, he continues to have a strong connection with his adoption history. Matthew’s high school Communication Arts teacher, Jen Schuemelfeder, says. "Matt has been able to parlay a school project, our American Studies social activism project, into a support group for students who are adopted.”

“The entire FRUA National Board and the FRUA-lllinois Chapter congratulate Matthew and his family,” said Sue Gainor, FRUA National Board Chair. “We are thrilled to support Matthew as he begins his college career. We hope to hear from him in a few years, if he can take a moment from his busy schedule to let us know how he made out!”

We suspect Matthew will be doing some amazing things and making wonderful contributions to those inside and outside the adoption community.

FRUA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all-volunteer organization founded in 1994. It has thousands of members across the United States with more than 30 chapters and nearly 100 alliance members.
