WHAT IS M.A.V.A.?

Mr. Ralph Villa from Cicero, IL, founded and incorporated the first chapter of the Mexican American Veterans Association (M.A.V.A.). His interest in the contributions of Mexican American Veterans to the United States of America led him to build a museum in the basement of his house. He began to organize M.A.V.A. in the Cicero and Chicago area. In March of 1985 Mr. Villa and his officers came to the Quad Cities. He selected Hero Street, Silvis, IL, as his focal point for forming a Quad Cities chapter. His presentation so enthused several of us that we began to take the first steps in forming a chapter of M.A.V.A. On June 21, 1985, Hero Street M.A.V.A. became chapter #4. We have grown from 20 charter members to 50 full members, 11 associate members, and 2 honoree members. As a Veteran's organization our primary function is to help our fellow Veterans and Veteran's organizations. We have donated to Q.C. Vets helping Vets, Vietnam Memorial, Korean Memorial Fund, Vietnam Veterans Chapter #299, Illinois Vietnam Memorial, Hero Street Memorial Fund, Iowa City Veterans Hospital, as well as individual Veterans Funds. Our Organization has sponsored and cosponsored the annual Hero Street Memorial Day Observance Ceremonies. We have also helped in the community by donating to such organizations as the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, Churches United, Salvation Army, Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Basket Funds, Jr. Panther Football & Basketball, and many more. This is just a brief summary of what M.A.V.A. has done and will continue to do. It is through the hard work and dedication of our members that we have been able to accomplish all of this.
