As part of the Myria Reed Foundation's programs, Sandra Reed, chairwoman and founder and Kathryn Forestal, president, presented a musical/theatre workshop for an autistic class at Le Moyne school, during their summer program. Our goal was to teach practical learning skills through art, dance, music and storytelling. Since this was a pilot workshop, the learning experience became a collaborative one, which we enjoyed as well, maybe soemwhat more than the children. Their individuality and uniqueness enriched the program beyond our expectations.

Sandra began by presenting a storytelling segment, which journeyed through the imaginary and celebrated the rainbow through art and movement. Although autistic individuals are considered to have short retention, the rainbow left a lasting impression for these children, thus giving them weeks of enjoyment for artistic expression. In weeks to follow, they composed their own version of the song "Chicago" with musical instruments and song, and in a later session, tripped the light fantastic with a sizzling Salsa danceathon.

In concluding the workshop, the children were presented certificates, beautifully designed and illustrated by Sandra, with a party of soul train music and lots of sugary treats. To our surprise, one of the participants, Cody, sang and entertained us with his rendition of popular rock and soul tunes, along with the national athem. He was a shining star amongst a cluster of starletts.

Sandra presented them with a print of a flower, and she compared the beauty of nature to their beauty and unique contribution to the human race. We gained some new friends and felt the love and pure energy these children exuded, for they touched our hearts and generated our love. Our hearts were heavy to say goodbye, but perhaps next year, we will go back to LeMoyne and present another workshop. Our experience was priceless and a memorable summer moment we will always cherish.
