Read 180 is an intervention program developed by Scholastic Inc. It is a center-based program which encompasses all aspects of Language Arts; reading, writing, grammar, phonics, even test taking skills. Students participate in whole group instruction, then rotate between small group instruction, the Read 180 computer program, and independent reading, where students read high interest books according to their reading level and ability. If you ever have questions regarding the material or structure of the program please feel free to contact me!

Students read independently in their own reading level according to their lexile score calculated by the Scholastic Reading Inventory

Read 180 class schedule:

per 2/3 7th grade

per 5/6 7th grade

per 7 8th grade

7th grade students are now receiving a double block of Read 180, replacing one period of exploratories. Round Lake Middle School is working on fully aligning itself with Scholastic's Read 180 model, which requires a 90 minute block for efficient instruction.

Read 180 is a technology based intervention program.

  Homework Policy
Absences can happen, however it is the student's responsibility to find out what they missed while they were out.

There is an assignment calendar posted in the classroom, and work is also posted on this site. In addition, I have added a Missed Work organizer where students can go find any activities I handed out that day. The last option is the old fashioned way, and definitely most efficient, and that is to ask me what was missed upon their return. Simply put, there is no reason to have missing work!

Because of the structure of the program, most work is completed in class. This means that they do not take home homework too often. It is crucial that students attend class regularly, or else they are liable to miss a lot of material.

Wednesday mornings are open for students to come in and either get help or make up work with their teachers, so I highly encourage my students to utilize this time if they are absent. If not, it is up to the student to arrange time with me to make up work that cannot be made up at home!

What is a lexile score?

A lexile is a unit of measurement used to gauge a student's independent reading level. It helps to determine the difficulty of text a student is capable of reading and comprehending.

When students take the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI), it gives them a lexile score which in turn allows me to place them in an appropriate reading level that isn't too difficult, but is still challenging.

For more information on lexile scores, click on the link to lexile.com.

Lexile ranges and grade equivalency:

    Grade 1: 100-400
    Grade 2: 300-800
    Grade 3: 500-800
    Grade 4: 600-900
    Grade 5: 700-1000
    Grade 6: 800-1050
    Grade 7: 850-1100
    Grade 8: 900-1150

Typical growth in one school year is usually between 75-100 lexile points.

  Classroom Rules
As discussed by the class:
Be respectful to your teacher, classmates, and classroom environment/materials.
    Be on time!
Understand that you make your own choices, and if disciplinary consequences are needed in response to those choices then you will receive them.
If class cannot begin because students are coming in late and goofing around after the bell rings, that wasted time is added on to the end of class. This is not a regular occurence, and tardiness to the next class is never an issue.

Students have a comfortable area to read in.

Students work on a culminating project after reading the book Dive together in their book club.

Showing St. Patrick's Day spirit, these students work on a writing assignment in small group.
