Urban Uplift is an organization that was designed to inspire, motivate, and educate individuals on urban community dynamics in the Chicagoland area. To answer the simple question: How can I help? How can I make a difference in my community? Urban Uplift board members, corporate officers, and volunteers alike have forged alliances with benchmark organizations in the fields of research, policy, finance, and even technology, in order to facilitate the desire for Chicago citizens to uplift the very city they reside in.

So what exactly to we do? Urban Uplift conducts research and develops strategy. We seek for crafted solutions to problems that may pervasively plague urban areas in Illinois. We then look to our community to develop these ideas, help them grow, and reach their target audiences. We network through universities, foundations, agencies, and governments in order to successfully complete projects and establish results.

Board of Directors

James Belcher

Donald Olsen, J.D.

Executive Director

Batool Musvi, M.D. is a Board Certified Internal Medicine physician. She completed her residency in 1982 at St. Francis Hospital in Chicago and has since been practicing primary care and preventive medicine. Her understanding of public health issues as a correlate of urban community dynamics and poverty has lead to her involvement with the Urban Uplift program. She also sits on the Board of Directors and offers administrative support and direction as well.

Director of Marketing and HR

Gregory Belcher. Experience with Mass Mutual, a leading financial corporation that operates companies such as the Oppenheimer Funds has given Mr. Belcher the tools and skills to effectively develop business on a local and national level. Greg leads the marketing and HR departments of Urban Uplift. A long standing tradition of civic participation in the Belcher family has lead Greg to pursue management of a non-for-profit.

Director of Business Development

Zafar Musvi is a departmental distinction graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. Zafar wanted to pursue his sociological interests by advocating the concerns and issues raised by Chicago citizens. Furthermore, experience with JP Morgan Chase has sparked his interest in developing creative finance strategies for non-for-profits. To this end, Zafar helped to implement and develop the Urban Uplift programs.

Director of Publications

Gerald Hankerson is a University of Illinois/Chicago communications major. Gerald is a native to Chicago's Humboldt and Hyde Park, arguably the most difficult areas in Chicago to live in with regards to poverty and crime. His deep reservoir of journalistic energy and personal desire to cover issues pertinent to urban community dynamics had lead him to pursue an editorial column, "Unspoken Words" and feature it in front of an Urban Uplift audience.
