The Session The Church Session is the governing body of the congregation, responsible for the oversight of nearly all aspects of the life of the local church. Members of the Session are known as Elders and are elected (generally for three-year terms) by the congregation. Elders are ordained officers of the Presbyterian Church and have certain governing responsibilities beyond the local church. Once ordained, they always retain the office, even though they may not be in active service on the Church Session. No Elder serves more than six years without at least a year for renewal. The current Elders of our church are listed here as an easy reference so that members of the church may know who to contact for specific administrative responsibility. Anyone wishing to contact an Elder through this website should do so through the general e-mail link near the bottom of our Home Page. You may also reach any Session Member by calling the church at (812) 926-2183. CLASS OF 2009 Kris Bill CLASS OF 2010 Lisa Barrett CLASS OF 2011 Dorthy Cassidy Here's A Fun Fact... The word "Presbyterian" is actually a Biblical Greek word from the New Testament. Literally, it means "Gray Beard" and refers to the practice of that time of choosing the community's leaders from among those who had lived the longest and therefore were presumed to be the wisest. When translated into western thought patterns, the association between the color of one's facial hair and wisdom can become obscure, so most translators simply render the word as "Elders". In modern Presbyterian usage, wisdom is not necessarily considered only to be a trait of those with gray hair, or even those who can grow it on their faces. Our Elders can be of any age and either gender, and perhaps the most sought after trait of wisdom is that which just comes from having good common sense. There is no hidden or secret meaning in our name. Presbyterians are simply Christians who govern themselves through the democratic process of choosing and electing people of common sense to lead the church. |
