FEATURE STORY "FATHERS AND SONS" Note: this feature article was taken from the Province Review, Vol. 51, No. 4, October, 2003.
"A Father's Day article by Wally Carew last June in the National Catholic Register featured the relationship between Fr. Edward Krause, Jr. and his dad, Edward 'Moose' Krause, Sr. Father Ed is an assistant professor of theology at Gannon College in Erie, PA and pastor of Immaculate Conception, a predominantly black inner-city church. The late Edward 'Moose' Krause was the legendary athlete, coach and longtime director of athletics at Notre Dame.
The article dealt with the 'mystery of grace working powerfully in the relationship of fathers with their sons.' By recounting aspects of the career of 'Moose' Krause and Fr. Ed, Carew's article spoke of the fulfillment of Christian manhood cultivated at the University of Notre Dame and of how faith is passed from one generation to the next.
Great love and loyalty was a constitutive element of the senior Krause. This love and loyalty expressed itself in the devotion 'Moose' showed for his Catholic faith, his alma mater and his family. This led to a loving, close, faith-filled home that influenced the three Krause children and those who knew them.
Just two weeks after Fr. Ed's ordination to the priesthood in Rome, January 1967, Mrs. Elise Krause was involved in a near-fatal car accident that left her bedridden. For the next 23 years, until she died in 1990, 'Moose' visited her two or three times a day in the nursing home. He spoon-fed her at mealtimes, supported and carried her when she attempted to walk, and sang songs to her at night when she had difficulty sleeping.
This took a toll on 'Moose,' and he fell victim to alcoholism, but, once again reaching deep down for spiritual strength, admitted his weakness and overcame the disease, living soberly and helping countless numbers of others with similar problems.
Mr. Carew makes a valid claim that this was 'Moose's' greatest legacy: The promise of baptism blossoming in the sacrament of marriage finding fulfillment in Christian family life.
Fr. Ed views his priestly ministry as rooted in his awareness that his life is a gift from God. 'The heart of my ministry is God's radical, eternal and infinite love for each one of us.'
We can most feel the love of God in our lives through the love we have felt in our own family. In Fr. Ed's case, it was evident, obvious and abundant. A great gift indeed."
