scan0017.jpgWELCOME TO OUR CHURCH!

As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), we are glad you have found our website and grateful for the opportunity to help you get to know us. We are proud to be a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregation and have a rich and long history of worship and service in the Dillsboro, Indiana area. Our worship services are open to everyone and we think you will find us to be warm and friendly. Come as you are most any Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. and join us! We aren't concerned with outward things, just in providing your heart with a safe and honest place to encounter God.

We provide a full range of pastoral services including weddings, funerals, and the regular celebration of the sacraments of the Lord's Supper and Baptism. We have special programs throughout the year and offer educational and youth related opportunities.

We are in mission together with Cincinnati Presbytery of the PCUSA and the First Presbyterian Church of Aurora, Indiana with whom we enjoy a "yoked" relationship. This allows us to provide numerous enrichment opportunities beyond our own doors including joint worship experiences, fellowship events, hands on mission and service efforts, and much more.

For a small church, we have a lot going for us that we would love to share with you! Most of all, we have a devotion to Jesus Christ and his way of love, compassion, acceptance, and forgiveness. We are different than most of the clubs, organizations, and institutions of the world which all require you to "measure up" in some way. We answer to a higher authority and when you come to us, you are not judged, but warmly received.

VISITORS AND SEARCHERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOMED HERE!

What Does "Presbyterian" Mean?
The word "Presbyterian" is derived from a Greek word which appears several times in the New Testament, particularly in the Book of Acts. This word literally translates as "Grey Beards" but is more often rendered in English as "Elders".

As used in scripture, "Presbyteros" describes the custom of the early Christian church to organize themselves in such a way that people who had a wealth of life experience were chosen to act as a governing body and made decisions about the day to day life of the congregation. In other words, they elected a committee of wise people to lead the church.

When working as a reformer in the 1500s, John Calvin adopted this model of church government and began the tradition that would become known as the Presbyterian Church.

The name "Presbyterian" describes our form of government within the church which continues the tradition of the congregation electing from its membership those who have demonstrated leadership qualities to make decisions about our life and mission together. These groups of "Elders" known as the Session of the church no longer need to have grey beards and are normally a mixed group of men and women of varying ages.

If this sounds like representational government to you, you've got the picture! In fact, many of the framers of the Constitution of the United States were Presbyterians and they borrowed heavily from their church background to develop the structure of our nation's government.

 Some Presbyterian Beliefs
Presbyterians share many of the same beliefs with other Christians, the principle one of which is that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. We use the same 66 book Bible as other protestant Christians and regard it as the inspired Word of God. Presbyterians also believe that "God alone is Lord of the Conscience" in matters of faith and practice - which basically means that in matters not related to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the individual Christian is free to believe whatever they feel led by their conscience to believe. Presbyterians truly believe that each person should have an individual walk with God that may differ at some points from their own. We take this belief very seriously and, as an example, instruct our delegates to church meetings not to reflect the wishes of those who elected them, but to listen for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Presbyterians also emphasize the importance of education, as we believe that God has given us brains with which to think and reason for the benefit of humankind. Across the globe, multiple respected schools of higher learning were established by Presbyterians and are still in covenant with the church. These include Princeton, Purdue, the University of Dubuque, and the University of Tulsa, just to name a few.

Presbyterians are also great believers in being involved in the life of their communities. High percentages of our members serve in school boards, city councils, boards of supervisors, state legislatures, even the U.S. congress and Senate. Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Ronald Reagan were Presbyterians and the only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence was John Witherspoon (although at least 14 of the other signers were also Presbyterians).
