Our Story
The Central Indiana Chapter of Project Linus was established in 1996. Since then, over 17,000 blankets have been lovingly made and donated to local hospitals, homeless shelters, foster homes, and camps for medically challenged children in the Indianapolis area and surrounding communities. In 2006, the Hamilton County Chapter of Project Linus was formed. This chapter has collected and distributed over 5,500 blankets and works together with the Indianapolis (Central Indiana) Chapter to meet the needs of our communities.

Project Linus has donated almost 4 MILLION handmade security blankets to children across the USA. We are most grateful for generous monetary and supply donations from individuals and businesses who care about the mission of Project Linus.

I would like to thank Kelly for all her hard work as chapter coordinator over the years. Her effort and kindness has helped more children than we know. She has been, and continues to be, a vital part of this chapter. Thank you for making this transition easier and for your support as I move into the coordinator position. -David

Dear Hamilton County Project Linus Blanketeers-

Please welcome David Flynn as the Project Linus of Hamilton County coordinator. David can be reached at projectlinushamiltoncounty@gmail.com.

Project Linus is named after the adorable security blanket toting character from the Peanuts comic strip. Creator Charles Schulz was aware of our effort and was delighted to have Linus inspire blanket makers to help comfort children in crisis.

"of all the things in the strip, I think that I am most proud of Linus' security blanket. I may not have invented the term, but I like to think that I helped make it part of our language." --Charles Schulz

Who makes all these blankets?

Project Linus is always accepting donations of handmade blankets, made with love by our wonderful blanketeers. You don't have to be an expert to create a blanket that is beautiful to a child!

Our chapters' blanketeers include many individuals, quilt guilds, church groups, school children, girl scouts, boy scouts, and senior centers. If you or your group is interested in helping to make blankets, please carefully read and follow all of the blanket guidelines.

If you're not sure where to start or how to make a blanket, we have some simple patterns for you to follow! Start off with a quick and easy fleece blanket pattern. Soon you will be having so much fun that you will want to try your hand at quilting, crocheting or knitting!

Blanket Requirements

We ONLY accept blankets made with NEW, CLEAN, AND WASHABLE materials in infant, child or teen friendly colors. We accept blankets that are crocheted, quilted, knitted, fleece blankets, or a tied comforter. We require that every item donated be totally new.

Approximate sizes: (measurements need not be exact)

Baby blankets: 36” x 36” Children's blankets: 42” x 60 Teen's blankets: 45” x 72”

Suggested materials: 100% cotton fabric, flannel, fleece, acrylic yarn

Unsuitable materials: denim, tapestry, polyester double knit, felt, vinyl, wool, corduroy wool yarn ... materials that aren't cuddly & soft used, soiled or old materials

Cautions: Batting in quilts should be securely sewn into outer seams. If the blanket is tied, anchor it every 4-6 inches. Do not attach buttons or similar decorative items to blankets, they can be choking hazards for children. Please remove all pins before turning in your blanket. If the blanket is no-sew tied fleece, please keep the fringe to 3" or less. The longer fringe is a choking hazard to young children, and also can get tangled in IV lines.

Note: Blankets that smell of smoke or strong chemicals, or have pet hair on them, cannot be accepted as they may produce severe allergic reactions in the children. Please sew in smoke-free, pet hair free environments. Thanks!
