LATEST NEWS!! NOV. 2013

LCF is about to release, from their large "socializing-training" cages, 7 adolescent kittens who were rescued from separate locations in the downtown area. All are doing very well. I am presently searching for a travel trailer to house these beautiful babies. They will be a permanent part of LCF N. Calif. as they are happy, healthy and content here and LCF is able to give them a forever home. Families will not be broken up. Mama cat is here w/her 3 kittens and the other 4 also have their mother, too. All is well. Participating in TNR in other parts of the community and have successfully placed a "barn cat" w/an excellent home where she will be well cared for, housed and free to roam in a safe environment.

August 2013

LUCKY CAT HAS BEEN BUSY!In the last 10 days, we've successfully captured 14 cats and kittens from a defunct industrial area that is going to be a massive construction zone pretty soon. These cats have lived out there as ferals, depending upon the kindness of those who work in the few remaining businesses that remain. This is a MUST DO situation as, when construction begins; the ground will be raised 5 feet to lift it above flood stage from the nearby Napa river. This is a heart breaking situation but one that must be done. All cats and kittens are being spayed and neutered. We must find a new place to TNR them as their existing home is in jeopardy.

WE NEED HELP finding homes and funding / repaying the organization who is sponsoring the spay/neuter through our local Humane Society. Lucky Cat has been helping out on a daily basis on many levels of cat care from trapping, housing, feeding, contributing time to the adoption center and working at the main residence where cats live prior to being s/n, tested, vaccinated and placed for adoption.

UPDATES on Fatso and Family

July 16 - I am so happy to report that Fatso and family members are all doing well. The Eggleston Street gang; 6 cats and one small dog, are living much better lives now that they are fed good food regularly and their flea, tic and ear mite issues are being treated on schedule. Today's visit was a joyful one; Fatso runs up to greet me as I approach. Canned food for all and a thorough visual physical examination ensues to assure that all is ok and pests are not present. I am always satisfied when parting when there is such great improvements.

June 21 - Happy Summer!! Today, we learned that our sweet cat, Candy, may NOT have skin cancer. Our SE Kansas fabulous Veterinarian has hopes that the lab diagnosis (which is not 100%, we were forewarned) is incorrect. Candy's condition seems to contradict the earlier findings. She has survived and thrived much longer than anticipated. Wish us luck and love..hopefully, sweet Candy just has an extreme allergic reaction to spring.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR VIDEOS WHICH ARE LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM ON THE LEFT HAND COLUMN. WE JUST POSTED A DEER AND CAT VIDEO THAT IS REALLY SWEET. GOLDIE CONTINUES TO HEAL and THRIVE!

Today, May 26, I was able to come into contact with a little cat I've been worrying about for quite a while. With canned food in hand, I was able to approach and feed her...I left flea meds w/the family where she lives, and nutritional kitten milk replacer to boost her health. I am monitoring her welfare daily. More updates to come.

Today's date is May 21. Now, three weeks since her surgery, Goldie is recovering nicely. Her eye has presented no problems and her stomatitis is being controlled w/meds. which we are beginning to wean her from. All is well with Goldie AND Mr. Tom, who underwent 95% dental extraction for stomatitis, as well. He, too, is recovering beautifully.

NEW MEMBER JOINS THE CALIFORNIA CAT SANCTUARY!!

About a week ago, I opened my front door and in ran the most sweet, gentle, young male cat. Despite the wear and tear, incredible hunger and oily coat, he was very loving. Of course, I fed him and cleaned him up and checked the morning paper for missing cats..no notifications. I quickly scheduled an appt. for check up and neutering. TODAY, Snowball is being neutered, vaccinated and tested. I shall continue to look for his former family members.

GOLDIE COMES THROUGH EYE SURGERY WITH FLYING COLORS

Our little female calico, Goldie, was diagnosed with severe complications to her left eye due to glaucoma. Our Veterinarians in SE Kansas suggested eye removal. On April 29th, Goldie's eye was removed. Today, May 2, Goldie is doing exceptionally well. She has 6 stitches which will be removed in a few weeks. This is one of the reasons I left my California Sanctuary for 3 weeks in SE Kansas; to be here for little Goldie and Al. All else is coming along; lots of work and loving our animals.

TOM UNDERGOES DENTAL EXTRACTIONS due to a severe case of STOMATITIS.

Our distinguished gentleman, Tom, had most of his teeth removed which is the common procedure to cure Stomatitis. After surgery, which occured on the same day as Goldies's; Tom is doing quite well, too. Lots of TLC required these days, at the SE Kansas Sanctuary.

UPDATE ON STREET CATS

April 18 UPDATE on FATSO

I am so happy to report that Mr. Fatso is, indeed, a fatso. He is so healthy, happy and hearty. I swear he smiles when I approach. All efforts on all fronts to help this cat have succeeded 100%. I am ecstatic !!

March 30. The Eggleston Street cat is doing so well. He's gained lbs. of weight, his coat shines, his nails are clipped and a second application of flea/tick topical meds have been given. He runs to greet me as I park my car and approach him.

NEWEST PROJECT: A friend has alerted me to three cats in great need. Skinny, flea bitten and who knows what else. I'm off to meet them for the first time today.

SMOKY MAMA RECOVERING AFTER DENTAL SURGERY

Just recently, our sweet little street urchin (no longer!) Smoky Mama, had many teeth pulled due to inflamation and infection. Poor little girl introduced herself to us by walking in my front door. We took her in but, there is no telling what she went through on the streets. She is doing very well.

SMOKY MAMA BACK IN FOR MORE CARE

Our little rescued girl is having a hard time. She has several conditions needing constant medications and observation for changes in status. Keep your fingers crossed for our girl.

These are examples of the care we give to our kitties.

UPDATES AS OF MARCH 2013

It has been a difficult year. We've lost several members of our beloved furry family. Old age and terminal illness have taken our friends from us. The expenses related to diagnostic and end of life efforts have been great. It is with much sadness that we say Good Bye to Sandy, Little Mama cat, Baby Girl,Smokey, Handsome, Muggsy, Sashi and Tiny Dancer. Two succumed to complications due to Feline Leukemia, two passed due to very advanced years, two to cancer and one, sweet Sandy, undiagnosed after months of tests; ultra sound (2), several xrays, multiple CBC and other blood panels, and a number of exotic tests. We are looking forward to better times with the help of all those who love animals.

DYING BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD March 20

A month ago as I drove down an alley way, I saw a very sick b/w cat whose mouth was swollen and he was drooling; he was very thin with matted hair.

I stopped and approached him. He could not close his mouth or meow. Quickly, I consulted w/my Veterinarians who prescribed Clavamox and I applied topical flea, tick and earmite solution. Within a short amount of time, making sure that he was given all his oral meds, TODAY, the cat is doing MUCH better. I am taking time daily, to monitor his progress while I continue to instruct and encourage his family to take proper care of him. He has become another member of my regular daily 'rounds;' keeping an eye out for animals in need.

catsonals_bed_in_Kansas.jpgWELCOME TO LUCKY CAT RESCUE SANCTUARY...

OUR MISSION:

Al and I have been rescuing animals, primarily cats, for decades. This is our purpose in life, and our mission. Everything we do and all that is ours, is dedicated to rescue, nurturing and loving the animals who have been abused, neglected, abandoned and worse; who have been left to fend for themselves in a difficult world. My heart aches when I think of all the animals who have no one to save them, no one who cares; no one to provide for them. Our every waking hour is spent towards helping as many as we possibly can. Our animals are well loved, well taken care of and live beautiful lives to their natural deaths. Should one of our beloved companions become ill or very old, and is no longer able to live a quality, comfortable and happy life, then, we hold them in loving arms as they cross over. This is our life.

SEPTEMBER, 2013: Lucky Cat Foundation is currently working with 10 "feral" cats who were rescued from a construction site soon to have existing buildings demolished while the ground level is to be raised 5 feet. These cats were living there w/others. I, another individual and a larger Napa based group have worked together to humanely trap these cats and bring them to safety. they are presently thriving at Lucky Cat sanctuary in California. Two siblings are wrestling and playing in my home as their other sibling and mother look on. These cats are such a joy and are so beautiful. Soon, Tracey and I will resume our rescue efforts to retrieve more cats and kittens from the site. We URGE everyone to SPAY and NEUTER your companion animals and help, whenever possible, others who are working towards the end of voluntary euthanization of our companion animals merely because they are considered an inconvenience. Enjoy this fun video knowing that these and more are saved.

In the next week, we will be doing TNR in a local downtown neighborhood where three kittens, a mother and unaltered male have been seen. We've checked w/neighbors and are assured that our assistance in spaying and neutering the cats will be greatly appreciated. Neighbors have committed to feeding and sheltering the cats, once returned.

We will also resume TNR at the huge construction site where the original 16 - 10 (plus 6 who were released) were captured.

WE ARE A NOT FOR PROFIT, TAX EXEMPT 501(c)(3) ORGANIZATION. ALL DONATIONS MADE TO LUCKY CAT FOUNDATION, INC. ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE

The specific objectives and purposes of the corporation shall be:

A. To rescue, house and care for stray and abandoned cats and dogs. Animal care shall include, but not be limited to, spay and neutering, medical and dental care, testing, vaccinations and humane euthanasia only in those cases where the animal's terminal illness has reached the point where the animal is suffering.

B. To provide funding to other people and organizations who are also rescuing, housing and caring for stray and abandoned cats and dogs. We support TNR programs for feral cat colonies and are presently (Aug. 2013) working on a major concentration of cats here in California.

C. To educate the public about the importance of spay and neutering, the many benefits of having companion animals, and the proper care of pets. The corporation's educational program will also include instruction on the actual rescuing of stray and abandoned animals, and how to handle frightened, combative cats and dogs.

Though we have been rescuing cats for 3 decades, we are just now beginning to establish our efforts as a Non Profit. We have received our official Articles of Incorporation which, legally, confirm LCF as an organization. We've obtained our license to solicit contributions and we've completed & received our official EIN (Employee Identification Number), though we have no employees. We are designated non profit, 501(c)(3) status. Ours is a volunteer organization which, currently, is comprised of Al, Kathy and Richard. We are also creating a Lucky Cat Foundation page which is linked to this site, in the left margin.

The link for the video is located in the column on the left side of this page, about half way down, under the heading, "Video introductions to Kathy & Al & the Cats."

Our efforts are ongoing and life long. This is a lifetime mission; one which not only saves beautiful cats and a few sweet dogs, it also adds so much to our own feelings of being worthwhile and having meaning in our lives. It is with great thankfulness that Al and I met oneanother and have been able to do this work together. California Cats in Cottage Cattery. Pictured are Socks, Adrian, Cloudy, Pepper, Toby, Jeter, Mama Mia and Shylow.

We began our care and rescue of cats in Napa, California during the 1980's. One by one, feral, abused, starving, homeless cats began just showing up. We took each one into our home, taking extra special care of immediate medical needs and, then, following through with the necessary procedures: Spay/Neuter, vaccinations, tests and proper daily nutrition and LOVE. Our cats live to old age, unless a fatal disease develops, in which case, we love and minister to every need until it is obvious that the quality of life has diminished. We NEVER allow one of our babies to leave this world alone. We ALWAYS accompany them as they travel to the next life; holding and petting them, speaking softly the words and phrases they have come to know....

ELK CITY CAT SANCTUARY

Kansas Sanctuary

Tramp, left alone and abandoned, now saved

The Elk City Cat and Dog sanctuary began in February of 2007. We bought a 10 acre farm with many outbuildings. Our dream was to house our California cats w/us forever, in this beautiful place. What happened was a life changing, ever present, set of circumstances. Animals, in every state of neglect and suffering, began to show up. "Drop offs" became common. Each and every one who has come to our little farm has found welcoming arms, good food and lots of love...along with the best medical, dental and preventative measures, Spay and Neutering, too. Now, we have two shelters; one in N. California and this one. Presently, Al is in SE Kansas while Kathy is in California. Our goal is to bring all our animals together, again, in one place. As it is, being apart and each, individually, caring for so many animals has become financially as well as emotionally and physically challenging.

LUCKY, OUR NAMESAKE

Lucky, my 25 year old companion

Years ago, my friend, Rick, arrived at my home w/a tiny tabby kitten tucked under his jacket. He'd traveled 15 mountainous miles on his motorcycle to my house, knowing that the little life he held near his chest, would find a loving home with me. You see, the little kitten had just lost her mother, her siblings, her aunt and cousins. They'd all been taken to the 'pound;' a certain death sentence at the time. Lucky, as she was to soon to be named, had hidden from the harsh hands that swept her entire family away, forever. Rick told me the story, sorry that he was too late to stop it, as he handed her to me. To tell a long story in few words, I took the sweet little one into my arms and she remained my faithful and loving companion for 25 years. Much of the most important years of my life were spent with Lucky constantly by my side, through moves, career and love life changes. Always constant, my beloved Lucky was my closest and most loved friend. Everything Al and I do for cats is dedicted to Lucky's memory. Lucky rests in my backyard, along with dozens of other kitties who came through our lives and lived to old age, in "Lucky's Garden." Rest in Peace, my sweet little friend.

STORIES TO COME

California Cat Cabin

We will, in the coming weeks and months, be adding many stories of the beautiful cats who have entered our lives. We also plan to add pictures and videos. Please check back, often. THE DAILY COST OF CARING FOR OUR BELOVED CATS IS TREMENDOUS. The additional expense of maintaining excellent health and dental care is huge. Up to now, March 1, 2013, we have been funding the care of our animals completely on our own. This is becomming quite impossible. We live 2000 miles apart which adds to the overhead of our cat rescue efforts. We hope to combine our sanctuaries in the future, to reduce expenses and work together, again. Whatever it takes, our first and foremost responsibility and desire is to care for our cats in the best possible manner. At this point, we need help.

Again, if you can, please donate. Our donation icon is on the left at top of the home page.

The above picture is one angle of the larger cat cabin in the California sanctuary. The building is 30' x 15' with an attached outdoor cattery. The kitties can exit and enter at any time they want and they have heat, overhead fan, AC and a television, too! There are two beds inside as well as many surfaces to lay and play. YOU CAN SEE MORE OF THIS KITTY HOME IN OUR VIDEO "SIMPLE INTRODUCTION," located in the margin to the left.

FOREVER HOME FOR RESCUED UNADOPTABLE CATS

Heidi, Friendly and Katie in Kansas

People often ask "what are you going to do with those cats?" I know that the expectation is that we'll rescue a cat, do necessary treatments and place the cat or kitten up for adoption.

Our philosophy is a little different. Because there is such a need for homes and so few available for all the abandoned, unwanted and unplanned for cats; not to mention the special needs kitties; we have taken a new approach. We offer a forever home to the cats who are deemed unadoptable.

As long as we can do it, we plan on keeping our cats...as it is, we can give them a fabulous home life, the best medical and dental and nurturing environment and lots of love. By doing this, we are not taking homes from other cats who are not as fortunate or for whom homes MUST be found. Since we are able to keep our cats, we feel we are allowing more hope for less fortunate cats. Since we spay and neuter, any cat who finds us will never reproduce and will live out their lives in happiness and safety.

Below are two images of our Little One. When we found her near death on a hot summer day and how our Little One looks today. We did not know for several weeks if she'd make it or not. Many visits and stays at our Veterinarian's office were necessary to see her through to recovery. She required fluids, antibiotic, lung fluid extraction, IV therepy. This is what Lucky Cat Foundation does.

Little One Now on June 2013

Katie showed up at the Kansas Sanctuary in such poor condition that we feared the worse. She was diagnosed with severe congestion, fleas, ticks, mange and dehydration/malnutrition. But, as is true with so many of our rescues...she recovered with excellent Veterinary care and lots of TLC at home. In picture two, here is Katie today, healthy and happy
