" Worship the Lord in 2011 "

"And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord." Luke 1:45

Mary had been through a lot. First she was approached by an angel who told her she would be pregnant (Luke 1:30). Then a pregnant Mary had to convince an understandably sceptical husband to be, Joseph, that she was carrying the son of God!

I would say that Joseph's disbelieving reaction was quite predictable under those circumstances (Matthew 1:19). Sometimes we have to trust God and do our best to act honourably even when we are not sure what is happening.

It's no surprise that Mary was keen to see Elizabeth immediately after her encounter with the angel (Luke 1:39-40). Meeting Elizabeth would have reassured Mary that she was not going insane. For if Elizabeth really was pregnant then this would confirm what the angel had told Mary.

Mary and Elizabeth came together and worshipped Christ our Lord (Luke 1:39-45). Here were two individuals barely recognised in the society of that day. No one else was there to admire what Mary and Elizabeth were doing and in many ways this was true worship in spirit and in truth.

They worshipped Christ for who he was. They did not understand everything about the child but they knew he was God's chosen one.

Our worship of God is a private lifestyle as well as a publicly celebrated act. It is our private life that drives our public life. The fiercest battles for our faith take place in private. Mary would have understood this very well (Luke 2:35). The thoughts rolling about in her mind would only have been tamed by God's word - words that came out of her own month (Luke 1:46-50).

As we worship the Lord together in 2011 remember that the battles you fight in private and the thanks you give in public are all part of your worship to God.
