FROM THE CHAIRPERSON I became involved with Prom Project in 2005, the first year the ministry started. What initially began as a way to get involved and meet some new friends in the church quickly turned into something much bigger. From the first moment I saw the looks on the girls' faces I was hooked. The first year approximately 45 girls came to our event. By the second year our event had more than doubled when we served over 150. Prom Project was growing by leaps and bounds and there was no doubt God was smiling down on our program as He continued to shower us with His blessings. There are continuous examples of how God has shown His favor with this ministry, but one of my favorites happened during the second year. We were struggling to come up with plus-sized gowns to fit some of the girls who we knew were coming. The event was getting close, and we just simply did not have the gowns when I received a phone call from a lady at a local bridal store who I had contacted several months prior. During our initial conversation, I explained our program and asked if they would donate any gowns. I didn't get a very favorable response so I marked them off my list and continued solicting donations. When she called she said she had gotten 5 dresses together, and you guessed it, they all just happened to be plus-sized! The best part of the story, though, is when I went to pick them up she hadn't given us 5, she had given us 12! It was truly a God-moment, and I felt His smiling face and His big hug of approval about this truly amazing event. In 2007, I was lucky enough to be given the gift of becoming Chairperson of Prom Project. My initial doubts at being able to pull the event together quickly faded as I saw the support, encouragement and generosity of the people of Northeast Christian Church and the Louisville community. I am happy to say God has blessed us once again to make 2007 the biggest year to date - we helped fulfill the dreams of over 250 girls! To me, Prom Project is so much more than just providing a gown, shoes and accessories to girls who have a financial need. It is about mercy; it is about grace; and it is about being able to share the greatest gift - the gift of God's love. |
