About Us
Our group was formed following the Aug. 31, 2004 ruling by a federal court judge in Lexington, KY to allow Horizon Natural Resources to file bankruptcy. With great outrage at the injustice which had occurred we formed a grassroots political action group called Keep the Promise to the Coal Miners, which launched a multi-state petition drive which sent over 1,000 signatures to Congress supporting the passage of HR3796 which would provide continued funding for health care coverage for retired union coal miners and orphaned miners (miners who's employers ceased operations and were left out in the cold like Horizon's retirees). In Nov. 2004 we were asked by members of the United Mine Workers of America to join in their efforts to reform federal bankruptcy laws and we gladly accepted the offer to be part of the national campaign to reform this nation's bankruptcy laws. Citizens United To Reform Bankruptcy Laws and Keep The Promise To The Coal Miners are both non-profit and non-partisan organizations.
