Welcome!

The Eco-Village Tree Snakes welcome you to their home page! We are a group at Berea College that is working very hard to learn about and show care and concern for our environment, the people that make up our world, and animals.

We are doing this by working with an international group called Roots and Shoots. Jane Goodall started this group in an effort to get young people world wide involved in conservation efforts. After all, the future is in our hands!

This website was designed so that people in our community can see what we're up to each month and join us for educational opportunities or service activities. We hope you find some interesting things on our site as you browse and we hope that you'll join us sometime soon!

Tree Snakes Win Second Place!

Congratulations to all of the Tree Snakes on winning second place in the Berea College Homecoming parade! We had a great time parading around town in our wagons, throwing left-over Halloween candy to the spectators, and sporting our giant peace dove puppets. We had a really great time!

You can watch a clip of us in the parade at http://www.berea.edu/bcnow/story.asp?ArticleID=542 :)

Tree Snakes Back in Action!!!

Even though our website has not been updated in quite awhile, we Tree Snakes have been as busy as bees learning about the world around us!

In September, we kicked off our Roots and Shoots year by celebrating the International Day of Peace with an enormous peace dove puppet! It was pretty awesome, even if we grown-ups had a lot of work to do putting it together and stayed up very late into the night!

In October, we had a Harvest Holiday Extravaganza! We did all kinds of harvest activities like reading stories, making traditional Celtic (we think) lanterns, taking a lantern walk, bobbing for apples, reading about Mexico's Day of the Dead, and eating all kinds of very creepy snacks! We had so much fun it was scary!

In November, we got to be in a PARADE! We carried our Peace Dove as a float and paraded through our city in wagons. It was so much fun! We even threw all our extra Halloween candy out to the spectators! The best part is, not only did we show our community that we stand for Peace, but we also won second place in the float contest!

We can't wait to see what's going on next week! Come join us!

An Update on the Bat Boxes...

Remember when we made those six really neat bat boxes to hang up around the eco-village? (If you don't, we have a link to our story in our links section!)

Our bat boxes never made it up in the eco-village because the powers that be thought they would provoke too much fear in our communities, even though we told them about the benefits that bats have. We were really sad. However, we are happy to report that our bat boxes are now up and hanging in Birmingham, Alabama!

A man there, named Chip McCain, has just had his yard registered as a Natural Animal Habitat and because of that, he cannot use pesticides in his yard. He has hung up our boxes to keep the mosquito and bug population is his yard down.

Thanks Chip, for showing care and concern for the environment and for animals in your community! We're glad that our bat boxes are helping you out! Together we really can make this world a better place!

Ways to Help Those Affected by the Hurricaines!

We hope you'll join us in helping our neighbors to the south. Here is a list of ways to help.

DONATE BLOOD if you are old enough and able to!

Donate bottled water

Donate non-perishable foods - especially baby food and formula

Have a diaper drive, get lots of sizes

Send bug spray! Standing water breeds mosquitos and diseases such as Malaria (transmitted by mosquitos) coud become a threat

Donate pet food for animals that are found and separated from their owners

Donate new or gently used toys (games are a great idea) and teddy bears, everyone needs something to hug!

Donate art supplies such as paper and colored pencils

Send books, adult and children's, for people to read

Collect school supplies.

Clean out your closets and send clothes, sheets, towels, and blankets.

Money is also a great idea, donate that to the American Red Cross. Their website is on our links list.

We Tree Snakes thank you for helping our friends and neighbors in any way you can!
