News
There is no longer an AmeriCorps on the Bayou program. However, their legacy lives on as can be seen by the October 3rd & 4th Planting Project which is a national partnership between NOAA Fisheries Community-Based Restoration Program & Americas Estuaries, the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, the Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary Program, the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, and sponsored by Les Reflections du' Bayou.

What to bring?

Planting May Day 2002

These planting projects get wet, muddy, and sticky. You should wear disposable (old) cloths for the project (you may want to consider a change of cloths for the trip home). Shoes which tie are better such as old sneakers, Handy items are a hat or cap, gloves, a rag, and don't forget the sunscreen. We will have water and supply a lunch of sandwiches. REMEMBER, Wet, Muddy, Bayou Water are key word here. Notice the pictures below.

New Orleans Charter Middle School
In early October AmeriCorps members held the first of three plantings with the New Orleans Charter Middle School. Members Jeff Smith and Kathryn Ruggels have been preparing the children by visiting them and talking to them about coastal Louisiana. The first class was a huge success. The kids were great!! They were very inquisitive and eager to get in the water and plant!! We planted smooth cord grass along the hurricane levee in Golden Meadow and it looks great!

Member Kat Ruggels and NOCM student Candice struggle in the muck to plant the smooth cord grass.

Planting with LA Department of Agriculture and Forestry
AmeriCorps members spend a great deal of their summer truding through muck, mud and water to help increase bank stabilization all over south eastern Louisiana. This summer we have planted smooth cord grass, cut grass and bull whip grass. These plants act as a buffer for the bank as wave action threatens to erode it. These grasses help us keep the land we have and build more.

Members Melissa, Kelly and Jeff pause in the flotant at Bayou Gauche for a picture
