Cajun News Network (CNN)
Our membership campaign has begun! That's right if you, your group or organization would like to participate in the planning of the future cultural center, the current coalition members would like to hear from you. Brick and mortar grants are needed to begin the construction, but the culture and people who make it are the biggest part. Any donations are welcome, and can be arranged by contacting us at the bottom of our webpage or mailing to our physical address. If you mail in a contribution, we will not only holler with glee, but we will send you a "I support the Cajun Cultural Center" button of your very own!!

The traditional French music sounds were bougee-ing(Hey,is that where "boogie" comes from?)all the musicians and dancers who attended the big music day with Ray Abshire and Friends on Saturday, June 11, 2005. Workshops were conducted in rhythm guitar, accordion, fiddle, bass, and dance for beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. The instructors included amazingly talented musicians like Ray Abshire on Accordion, Terry Huval from Jambalaya Cajun Band on Fiddle, and from the Lost Bayou Ramblers, Andre Michot on Guitar and Allen LaFleur on Upright Bass. Local dancers, Gloria and Nolan Foscea and Joy and Vin Rodrique were on hand for dancing workshops, too. The afternoon jam session was a great time for putting all the new tunes and techniques into action!! After the learnin' and the jammin', Ray and the boys cut loose for a nice concert and dance-it was great!! If you didn't make it-Tu manquees une le bon temps, c'est vrai!- y'all better plan on next year!! We're planning on it again with Ray Abshire and Al Berard!! Mark your calendars for April 22, 2006
Working Wood: Wooden Boats of Bayou Lafourche, was on display from Mar-May 2005 in the Lafourche Parish Library System. The final week of the display, the Cut Off/Galliano Library hosted a reception. There was a fine turn out of older and current fishermen and their families. The library staff put up a very nice spread, and Mr. Butler shared a few words about the exhibit. It was a fine time and nice conclusion to the exhibit. The boat exhibit has moved on to the Ellender Memorial Library on Nicholls State University campus and will go to Houma Waterlife Museum in October. Hope you can catch it!
This program was made supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Houma-Terrebonne Arts and Humanities Council.

The grant awards continue to come in for coalition member groups. LEH has committed grant money to help create radio segments covering the culture and history of the south Lafourche Bayou area; LADOA has offered financial support to assist wit the assembly of a heritage tour for visitors to the south Lafourche region. With hopes to continue public programs through other funding organizations, such as the LA Decentralized Arts Funding Program which provided grant money for both the Friends of Traditional Louisiana Boat Building and the local chapter of the Cajun French Music Association projects.

The Cajun Cultural Coalition is happy to announce The 2005-06 Louisiana Division of the Arts Award of Louisiana Artist Fellowship to wildfowl carver, Mr. "Tan" Brunet of Galliano. He will receive a special stipend for his work and recognition from the state for his talent and life-long commitment to Louisiana folk art. In 2004-05 a $3000 grant award for the folklife apprenticeship in wildfowl carving was given to Hamilton Dantin and Dillon Baronne. Louisiana Division of the Arts provides this funding to promote the teaching of traditional arts and crafts to younger generations around the state. Mr. Dantin of Raceland has been carving for the past thirty years. He learned to carve from the such Bayou Lafourche Masters as Reme Roussel, Theodule and Dewey Pertuit, and Richard Waguespack. At fourteen years old Dillion Baronne of Mathews has already won several blue ribbons for carvings in his age class. Previously, he has worked with Mr. Dantin and Robby Matherne of White Dove Studios. Over the next year the two carvers(master and apprentice) will work together and use the money provided by the state program to reimburse the master for his teaching time and materials.
