Cajun Cultural Coalition History The Cajun Cultural Coalition was organized in 2001 with the intention of creating a place to celebrate and to share the rich traditions and water-based folklife of the Southeast Louisiana. In the last three years much has been done to research the set-up of the Cajun Cultural Center. Many grants have aided with this research, but we are still looking for the financial means to initiate the construction of our cultural center. Much of what is promoted about Cajun ways comes from the Southwest part of the state where the Prairie Cajuns roam. In Southeast Louisiana, we have our own ways, chere! From handmade wooden boats and hand-carved decoys to bouille and boulettes, you could sail, shoot, or shrimp your way through the whole of southeast Louisiana. There's always a lot of action down our way! Please stay tuned for more exciting entries from bayou country! The Cajun Cultural Coalition wishes to create a multi-disciplinary cultural center in Larose, LA. The member groups include Cajun Heritage Festival(wildfowl carving club), Cajun Country Music, Inc., Center for Traditional Louisiana Boat Building, Les Amis du Francais(Cajun French language preservation group), Hurricane Cheniere Caminada(area history group), and Cajun French Music Association. These groups are all looking for a home in south Lafourche. The cultural center would not only offer these groups space to meet and to work, but room to offer classes, display artwork, and have concerts. With the help of grants from Louisiana Division of the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts, coalition members have been able to visit state and national cultural centers for approaches to the best designs and programs to benefit the area. Tulane University's Regional Urban Design Center has completed a model of the future cultural center resulting from grant monies, and the National Endowment for the Arts provided funding to bring a folklorist to the area for documentation of the vast regional folklife. Now, we seek the means to begin construction. |
