Cajun News Network (CNN) Our membership campaign has begun! That's right if you, your group or organization would like to participate in the planning of the future cultural center, the current coalition members would like to hear from you. Brick and mortar grants are needed to begin the construction, but the culture and people who make it are the biggest part. Any donations are welcome, and can be arranged by contacting us at the bottom of our webpage or mailing to our physical address. If you mail in a contribution, we will not only holler with glee, but we will send you a "I support the Cajun Cultural Center" button of your very own!! |

C'EST QUOI CA, SUR LA BATEAU!!
Master boat builders from such Bayou Lafourche Families as Cheramie and Duet, have been creating amazing wooden boats for generations. While most of these builders never used a blueprint, an eye and a bandsaw were enough to construct some of the finest architecture on the bayou. Here are Cajun French terms for lugger trawler parts(as told by Mr. Hewitt Ledet):
L'Etrave=Bowstem;
Le Bottum/La Quille=Keel;
Le Limon=Box Keel;
Le Passavant= Side Deck Passage;
La Trolle=Net;
Le Gouvernail=Rudder;
Le Propell=Propeller;
La Cabine= Wheelhouse;
And below deck was divided into three sections: Le Roufe=Front(Bow)Section, used for sleeping or additional storage;
La Call= Shrimp Hold(Middle Section);
Le Chambre du Machine = Engine Room.
LACHE PAS LA PATASSA!
Don't drop the perch-haha- this is a variation on the verbal Cajun French pat on the back, Lache pas la patate, but it's fishing time on the bayou, not that it isn't always, but they're really bringing 'em in now! So, let's look at some Cajun French Words for the fish one might pull out of the bayou, marsh,or gulf.
Patassa=Sun Perch
Choupique= Bowfin
Sac-au-lait= Crappie
Poisson Rouge= Redfish
Barbue/Goujon= Freshwater Catfish
Tete dur/Mashwaroun= Sea Catfish
Truite Gris= Speckled Trout
Grande Ecaille= Tarpon
Tambour=Black Drum
Plie=Flounder
Mulle= Mullet
Sardine=Menhaden
Docteur=Sea Robin
Poisson Arme= Gar
Terre/Ange=Skate/Stingray
Anguille= Eel
