If Snow White ever came to the bayou, she would probably arrive in a pirogue, sweating from head to toe, and unable to understand our thick Cajun accent! Well, one group of people is getting ready for her very arrival. Only their Snow White is called Blanche Neige, she speaks Cajun French, and her seven French-speaking dwarves and handsome Cajun prince are there to help her. Local resident, Bobby Gisclair, spent months translating the classic fairy tale into our local French dialect and then making recordings of the play for all the cast. Gisclair looked for a classic fairy tale because he felt like even non-French speakers along the bayou could enjoy the play. Gisclair went to local Cajun play write, John Doucet, for advice. Doucet liked Snow White above other tales. “Plays are language in action. With the Cajun French Snow White, we have two endearing stories of adversity--the flight of Snow White to the forest to hide from the wicked queen and the flight of Cajun French from ours and our parents’ tongues to avoid punishment and persecution. And just as Snow White overcomes the threat of the wicked queen, so too must our Cajun French heritage overcome the threat of loss. The Cajun Snow White is an important step in increasing the awareness of loss of our ancestral dialect and the attractiveness of preserving it," says Doucet. The cast is composed of both French and non-French speakers, but the audience will have a hard time telling the difference. Les Artistes du Bayou member Dolores Granger has constructed the scenery for the play, giving it only a slight Cajun flair, while Gisclair’s wife, Cida, along with parents of the cast sewed the costumes. Jimmy and Debbie Gisclair worked on music and sound for the play. The play is scheduled to debut at the Cut Off Youth Center Fair at 2 pm on Sunday, September 29th. Admission is free since only two scenes will be acted at the fair. The whole play is scheduled for its first performance this coming fall. Entergy gave a Community Partnership Grant to Les Amis du français to cover play expenditures as well as to video tape the play and distribute it to French classrooms in the parish. Les Amis du français is a member of the Cajun Cultural Coalition that seeks to pass on local culture to future generations in a modern multi-disciplinary cultural facility that will offer boat building, duck carving, Cajun music, arts and crafts, genealogy, and cooking classes as well as other cultural events. As Doucet further comments, "Bobby Gisclair and his helpers and collaborators should be congratulated for this tremendous cultural effort. We as the southern Louisiana community must make sure to support and build upon his dream of preservation."
