Mission Statement:

Les Reflections du Bayou's mission is to protect, clean and beautify the banks and roadsides of Bayou Lafourche and its surrounding communities and to build community pride and environmental awareness through volunteerism, education, and collaboration. We at LRdB focus on four main program areas within the communities located along the southern banks of Bayou Lafourche. These are:

-Administering environmental and other community enhancement grants

-Administering The Kids Trash Patrol Program

-Organizing community-wide clean-ups and undertaking beautification programs

-Administering the Community Service Worker Program.

Volunteers are always needed and are encouraged to stop by our office at 14833 Highway 1 in Cut Off, to call us at 632-6040, or to email us at reflections@mobiletel.com

In September of 2003, the EPA awarded a grant to Les Reflections du Bayou to accomplish three items by July of 2005:

(1) Plant at least 9,000 wetland plants in areas which have erosion activity along the banks of Bayou Lafourche and the Hurricane Protection Levees.

(2) Monitor at least 4 sites for nine different characteristics (temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrates, orthophosphates, chlorides and salinity.)

(3)Increase awareness within our community of on going environmental factors and increase our membership by 25%.

The plantings have been completed.
We would like to thank the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, the South Lafourche Levee District, the USDA Golden Meadow Plant Materials Center, the Kids Trash Patrol, Galliano Elementary's Beta Club, the Royal Rangers, and Missionettes, South Lafourche High School's volunteers, Nicholls State University's Environmental Science Club, AmeriCorps of Iberia, the Sheriff's Work Release Program, LRdB members and community volunteers for their help in making the plantings very successful. In all 15,570 plants were planted. This far exceeded the grants requirements. Mitch's Landscaping was the low bidder on the project. We also thank him for his service to our organization and the people of South Lafourche. Funding for the plants was made paossible by a grant awarded to Les Reflections du Bayou from the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana and their parent sponsor, NOAA's Fisheries' Community-Based Restoration Program and Restore America's Estuaries.

Water Quality Monitoring
Within the floodgate system, we have monitoring sites at Golden Meadow Middle, South Lafourche High School, Cut Off Elementary, and LCO Middle. Above the floodgate system, Lockport Middle School is the offical monitoring site. School children and their teachers dedicated to our ecology and environment are doing the actual monitoring. Below Golden Meadow outside the floodgate, Johnny Robichaux, a citizen volunteer, is monitoring at Tidewater Dock. This gives us the ability to monitor the effects of having the floodgates closed for any length of time. It also lets us monitor salinity levels which is very important. Wetland plants used in erosion controlled plantings need to match the salinity requirements of the environment they are placed in. We are very grateful to all who are participating in our water quality monitoring program.

Awareness
We continuously strive to bring awareness to our area residents. The Lafourche Gazette, The Daily Comet, Vision Communications, and KLRZ have all donated in-kind services to keep the residents of South Lafourche informed. We thank them for their generosity.

GREAT AMERICAN CLEAN-UP The Annual Great American Cleanup held in May 2004 was rained out on its scheduled date. It was rescheduled for one week later. The yearly event will be moved up to late March or early April this year to avoid conficts with other local events such as high school graduation parties and the begining of trawling season. If you or your local group would like to join in the effort, please contact us by phone at 985-632-6040 or by e-mail at reflections@mobiletel.com.

We encourage businesses to ask some of their employees to help out for this event. Our goal is to have 30 or more businesses represented in 2005.

Our deepest thanks to all individuals and businesses for their generosity and concern for the community.

Les Reflections du Bayou Celebrates 15th Year

During the past 15 years, Les Reflections du Bayou has had the privilege of working along side many dedicated individuals. These individuals and businesses gave something back, to continually improve our community for all. Whether this was to bring attention to and solve pressing litter problems, beautify the bayou side and showcase our heritage or just raise awareness within the community of the great beauty and uniqueness of the bayou. Les Reflections du Bayou has strived to be a meaningful and successful medium. This service was recognized nationally in December of 2002. Les Reflections du Bayou's founder, Peggy Bagala, traveled to Washington DC to receive the President's Community Volunteer Award from President Bush at the White House. Les Reflections du Bayou was one of only 19 organizations from around the country to receive this prestigious award. We thanks all past volunteers and supporters who have helped over the past 15 years in contributing to this community.

Kids Trash Patrol Continues to Meet!

Sheriff Craig Weber stands with deputized members of Les Reflections du Bayou's KIDS TRASH PATROL

The KIDS TRASH PATROL continues to meet monthly on the first Saturday of the month from 9:30 to 10:30 (except holidays)to do environmental projects around the community! The Patrol has its own website - www.orgsites.com/la/kidstrashpatrol - where the public and Patrol members can keep abreast of the Patrol's projects. Thanks are extended to Sherrif Craig Webre's Office for their support during our past cleanup. New handbooks are available at the LRdB office. We have a special award for those KTP members earning 50 points or more. Congratulations to them and to all the other members who have worked hard in the Patrol!

GREAT JOB, AmeriCorps on the Bayou 2002 Members

Future of AmeriCorps on the Bayou

There will not be a 2005 team at Les Reflections du Bayou. We hope to get enough sponsors to have a 2006 five person team or a DeltaCorps worker.

Local Youth Contributes Talent to Organization

Anthony Reed, an eighth grader at Larose-Cut Off Jr. High, has designed both of Les Reflections du Bayou's websites. Thank you, Tony, for both finding the free website space and the technology that allows us to more easily update our sites!

  The GHEENS FOUNDATION
THANK YOU, Gheens Foundation, for your generous support of Les Reflections du Bayou. This year we received $3,200. WE APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT!
