PHILOSOPHY:    
Art is a univeral and basic language for all civilizations. It is, and always has been, an essential part of human history, mythology and religious beliefs. Art helps to nurture a Catholic sense of what it means to be human. Art education, coupled with Christian values, provides a basis for positive growth and development that is essential for all individuals in a complex and culturally diverse society. It is therefore, essential that art education be an integral component of secondary Catholic education. As part of the general learning process, art complements the curriculum to help develop the whole person. Art education fosters visual acuity, aesthetic sensitivity and literacy, creativity and cummunication skills. Art education also promotes understanding of past and present cultures, respect for artistic expression, and experience in understanding one's self and others.
 
OBJECTIVES: 

Art education is consistent with the goals of Catholic education in a democratic society. These objectives are to develop and promote the following qualities:

- Students will learn how to critique works through writing and oral presentations.
- Students will better understand aesthetics as it relates to the natural and man-made environment.
- Students will begin to learn art history.
- Students will produce works of art.
- Students will learn the basic elements and principles of design.
- Students will be encouraged to think creatively and imaginatively.
- Students will be taught how to be good craftsmen and women.
- Students will enhance critical thinking skills.
- Students will learn how to identify different artists, styles and techniques.
- Students will be encouraged to be concerned with conditions and rights of all living things.
- Students will be encouraged to experiment, explore and use divergent thinking in solving problems.
- Students will be encouraged to take pride in their art work and work that has been accomplished skillfully through the honest expression of materials.
- Students will be encouraged to express personal thoughts, feelings and ideas.
- Students will look at works of art and compare/contrast them.
- Students will learn organizational skills.
- Students will learn how to work independently as well as cooperatively on classroom art projects.

ART LEVELS I, II, III & IV

ART I - LEVELS 1 and 3
PRE REQUISITE: Juniors and seniors must write a one page essay explaining why they want to take Art I.

This course covers the basic elements of design. Students learn various art techniques and proper use of materials. Fundamentals are emphasized by doing projects in the following areas: drawing, painting, sculpture, persepctive, ceramics, lettering, and art history.

ART II - LEVEL 2
PRE REQUISITE: Art I (Seniors must have teacher's approval)

This course covers the basic principles of design and builds upon the basics learned in Art I. Students experiment and explore different media to discover solutions to design problems. Studio activities include portraiture, figure drawing, painting, calligraphy, sculpture and art history.

ART III - LEVEL 1
PRE REQUISITE: Art I and Art II

The Art III course of study emphasizes art criticism and critical thinking skills in two and three-dimensional design. Studio activities include drawing, painting, sculpture, two and three dimensional design and art history. Special attention is given to developing a portfolio for students interested in art as a career.

ART IV - LEVEL 1
PRE REQUISITE: Art teacher's approval

This course is designed to help the student complete his/her portfolio and develop proficiency in a particular medium. Students who do not plan to pursue a career in Art are encouraged to learn the intricacies of Art for personal enrichment. Studio activities include computer graphics, quick time movies, two and three dimensional design, painting, drawing, sculpture and art history.
