MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Guidance Department is to focus on both the academic and personal needs of each individual student. Academically, the Department advises students in the selection of courses in preparation for college and professional life. Personally, the Department helps students understand themselves in relation to the world in which they live, to recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and to develop an ability to cope with and solve problems. This may be accomplished in an individual, small group, or class setting. The members of the department recognize that educational, personal, and social components contribute to the development of the whole individual.
SENIORS
Reminders!!!!!
The criteria for college acceptances:
A. Secondary school record
B. SAT scores
C. Class Rank
D. Extra curricular activities and community service
E. Personal Interview (some colleges)
F. Letters of recommendation(teacher,guidance)
COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS
Most colleges require that students take SAT I, especially 4 year institutions. Some require SAT II (Subject tests). The college catalog will detail this requirement, or you can contact the college admission office for further information.
ADDITIONAL SENIOR REMINDERS:
Remember to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse if you intend to play Division 1 or Division 2 college sports. Their website is www.ncaaclearinghouse.net and to pay the fee you will need access to a credit card. Additionally, it is imperative that you send your SAT scores directly to the clearinghouse. You must do this on your SAT registration by putting the code 9999 in the area designated for college reports.
Also there are new requirements for NCAA eligibility. Please check with your guidance counselor to make sure you have the appropriate courses.
It takes three days to process your applications for scholarships. We cannot give you a copy of official transcripts, so please do not ask.
JUNIORS
During the Junior year, the focus is on college search and preparation. This includes the necessary tests such as PSAT's, SAT's, and ACT's. ACT is offered in April at Holy Name.
Registration for SAT and ACT are the student's responsibility although Guidance will provide instruction and assistance. Online registration is encouraged. The website for SAT is www.collegeboard.com. For ACT, it is www.act.org.
Juniors should also be gathering information on various college choices by visiting college representatives, using computer resources as well as college books and other information available in the Guidance Office.
Later in the school year, Juniors should be in the process of completing their resume and speaking to teachers about college recommendations. Each student is required to have three teacher recommendations as well as one from their guidance counselor.
Juniors should also be focusing attention on developing a college essay. Good information on the college essay is available at www.essayedge.com
SOPHOMORES
During Sophomore year, the Guidance Department encourages students to continue to excel academically and to take advantage of afterschool help when necessary. Sophomores should also begin exploring personal and professional goals. There are several tools used to help students with this process, such as The Harrington-O'Shea Career Decision-Making System Interest Survey and My Road. The students are also exposed to career information on related websites.
Throughout the year guidance appointments are made for each student with Ms.Kohn (A-L) or Ms.Ivas(M-Z). If further guidance is needed, students are encouraged to make an appointment. Appointments can be made before or after school or during lunch time.
FRESHMEN
Freshmen should be working to achieve the highest grades possible. Any student who is having difficulty in any subject should stay after with the teacher. Teachers stay Monday - Thursday from 1:50 - 2:20 p.m. or in some instances later.
In addition students should consider becoming involved in some after school activity whether it be sports, drama, chorus, SADD, yearbook, musical, ski club, etc.
Students will be scheduled for guidance appointments, but are encouraged to make appointments on their own. Any concerns or questions should be directed to Mrs. Leahy.
