The Sutton High School School to Career Internship Program will promote exploration and skill building in the areas of self awareness, future planning, career development, and personal responsibility through a contracted internship placement within area communities.
The internship experience is designed to enhance and demonstrate the relevancy of the student's academic curriculum to the world of work and to establish a foundation for enabling students to make good decisions about career choices.
What is an Internship?
An internship is a worksite experience, in which a student completes a planned curriculum of activities or projects designed to give a broad understanding of a business or occupational area under the guidance and supervision of a worksite "mentor". By integrating the internship activities at the workplaces with school-based learning, the student will develop both job and academic skills. An internship culminates in a demonstration of learning jointly evaluated by school and worksite staff. Internships are available to students who are in the 12th grade.
Internships can help students:
- Develop transferable academic, ethical, and workplace skills
- Apply basic skills and knowledge to real-world settings
- Learn new skills relevant to the business hosting the internship
- Increase self-esteem by assuming responsibilities in adult work settings
- Focus career interests by experiencing a job and career area in depth
- Understand workplace culture and how to relate to staff and supervisors
- Understand the connection between school, work, and achieving goals
