Publishing Policy

All student submissions will be published, provided they comply with the guidelines on the submission form and are accompanied by a parent or guardian's signature.

All pieces will be published as submitted, with the original format, spelling, punctuation and grammar. We will focus on fostering the desire to write; editing and proofreading will be up to the parent or guardian and the author. We feel that this will be a more accurate reflection of each author's age and abilities, and will allow the parent/guardian to decide the best way to help the child develop confidence in their own unique talents.

Each contributor will receive public recognition and their own personal copy of the the magazine. Additional copies will be available to borrow from the school library.

Inspiration

The title Under the Linden Tree was inspired by a combination of local history, a rich tradition of lindens in literature, and the practice of using tree hollows for the exchange of secret notes.

The Great Linden can be found growing on the grounds of what is now the Daniel Webster Estate in Marshfield. This tree is believed to have been brought from England by William Thomas and planted in 1640. At a crossroads a few miles away at Tarkiln, a granite marker commemorates an old oak. Called the Tree of Knowledge it was used between 1774 and 1845 as a mailbox for post riders and stages between Plymouth and Boston.

It wasn't by chance that a tree was chosen as the inspiration for this magazine. We write and print on paper, and paper comes from trees. To respect this connection, we will be using recycled materials whenever possible.
