Theology III: Morality/Social Justice Grade 11

Course Description and Objectives

Part I of this course will provide the students with a basic method for moral-decision making in the light of Gospel teaching. This method will be applied to moral issues in the world today with the goal: to reach a Christian resolution to moral problems.

Part II of this course will focus on Social Morality and the call of Jesus in Matthew 25. Many social issues of today will be discussed in the light of this call. Students will participate in a Service Project which will involve a minimum of 20 hours of community service to local agencies and organizations.

Students this year will be able to apply the teachings of Jesus and his Church to their own personal lives, as well as find Christian solutions to many injustices in our society today

Theology II: New Testament/Sacraments Grade 10

Course Description and Objectives

The focus of this course is Jesus Christ: primarily as He is presented in the Christian Scriptures. We will look at the development of the New Testament through an academic and spiritual study of the Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, and Letters of St. Paul. We will also seek to APPLY the teachings of Jesus to our own personal lives through the Good Samaritan Project, as well as our daily interactions in the classroom, in the home, and in society.

The sacraments of the Catholic Church will also be studied. We will look at their origin and practice. Sacramental experiences will also be included in the course.

Twelve hours of community service will be required this year.

Students should gain an appreciation for the role of Jesus Christ in their lives, as well as to be able to critically read scripture with an understanding of its content and context.

Code of Conduct for Grades 10, 11, & 12

Holy Name’s Code of Conduct will be strictly enforced in this course.
(Please reference the Student Handbook for a complete explanation of these rules and expectations).

CLASS GRADE:
All students begin the quarter with a 100 point quiz grade. (Up to two of these per quarter).
This grade will be lowered by 5 points each time the student receives a strike in any of the following:
gum chewing, eating, dress code, late for class, not prepared for class, talking, out of seat, or sleeping in class.

The grade will be lowered 10 points for each of the following:
sent from class, disrespect and/or rude comments, talking or doing other work during prayer, or blatantly disregarding a request.

Integrity – Honesty & Trustworthiness

  • All written work must be your own. If you are quoting other sources, you must use quotation marks and note your source.
  • Format: Must include name, date, and class period. Must be written neatly in blue or black ink. No jagged edges on homework. 5 points off for improper format. (Typing required on some assignments).
  • Check the web site weekly for homework assignments. Homework assignments will be posted several days in advance of the due date. The purpose of homework is to assist you in the learning process. Do your own!
  • No Cell Phones: If it is seen or heard, IT IS TAKEN!
  • Rules for dress code, gum chewing, etc. will be written up as “STRIKES.” (The Strike Rule will be explained in class)

Responsibility – Accepting ownership for the results of our actions.

  • All students must be in their seats by the late bell. Also: students must remain in their seats until the dismissal bell.
  • All students must bring: pen, textbook, and notebook each day to class.
  • A single Theology notebook must be kept (or a separate section in a notebook) for each quarter. The day and date must be written for each weekday of the course. Something must be written under each date. Notebook quizzes will be given periodically.
  • INFORMATION PAGE – Keep track of all grades in your notebook or planner.
  • Any assignment that is 1 day late drops one grade; 2 or more days late receives a “0”
  • Students are responsible to make up all tests, quizzes, papers, homework, and projects when they are absent. By copying down assignments and notes when you return, you will know what you missed. It is your responsibility to come and see me to make this up.
  • After school help is available daily in the Campus Ministry office.

Respect – Treating all of God’s creation with courtesy and dignity.
  • Positive participation in class is key to making the class more interesting and more welcoming. Extra points can be gained by frequent participation.
  • This class must be a “safe place” for students to share their views without fear of criticism or ridicule. ---Gossip and negative talk about others is unacceptable.
  • Remember: “It is not a joke, unless both people are laughing.”
  • All students are responsible to keep the room clean. Any writing on desks or defacing books or other school materials will result in a “work detention” in addition to a “STRIKE.”

Catholic Citizenship -- Living and promoting the values of Jesus and the Catholic mission of peace and justice not only within the Holy Name community but also outside of Holy Name.
  • All students are required to perform service hours outside the school. Living the Christian life is not possible without service to others. A grade will be given for a related assignment on your service.
  • Disrespect for anyone or harassment of anyone is not acceptable. An “Incident Report” will be written for any student who violates this rule.

All Tests, Quizzes, Papers, and Projects will be assigned a value prior to the assignment. Guidelines for each assignment will be explained in class.
