The goal of the Friends is to raise awareness, raise funds, and provide resources to promote sailing and other watersports in the Town of Swampscott.

Objectives

  • To support sailing, racing, and safe boating in Swampscott
  • To develop youth racing in Swampscott.
  • To raise funds and provide resources to the Sailing Program that are not available through the Town.

We have accomplished a lot in our first 4 years of involvement with the Swampscott Sailing Program:

  • Revised the Junior Sailing curriculum, created the Adult Sailing course
  • Worked with the Town to replace the 15-year old fleet
  • Raised money to purchase and donate 2 Club 420 Racing boats
  • Restarted the racing program and sent a crew to Marblehead Race Week for the first time in 20 years.

We have high ambitions for the next 5 years. But to make Swampscott Sailing the Best Town-Based Sailing Program in the North Shore, we need your help. Our top goals are 1) improving the quality of instruction, 2) developing the youth racing programs at all levels, 3) maintaining the fleet and equipment, and 4) establishing a Swampscott High School Sailing Team. To support those goals, we need to:

  • Provide scholarships for US SAILING Level 1 Instructor Training ($1,000)
  • Purchase teaching aids ($500)
  • Obtain a TV, VCR, and DVD for classroom teaching (anyone upgrading to flat screen?)
  • Replace hand-held VHF radios ($750)
  • Refurbish Boston Whaler Support Boats ($500)
  • Replace sails for the American 14.6s ($2,000 or possible sailmaker donation)
  • Maintain annual U.S. Sailing membership ($100)
  • Provide entry fees annually for Marblehead Race Week ($200)
  • Purchase Club 420s for Youth Racing and Big Blue High School Sailing programs ($16,000)
  • Purchase a Club 420 Trailer for away events ($1,500)
  • And aiming for the future: Obtain 2 larger sailboats for the Adult Sailing Program - J22, J24, or other keelboats – ($20,000)
