Willow Springs Golf Course

May 7, 2012

Four groups of ladies played and enjoyed this course which is located in West Friendship, Maryland. I couldn't get a picture of Maria, but the other ladies are shown in the collage above. They are: Barbara Collaso, who arranged this outing, Irene Gaskins, Regina Drake, Pat Williams, Lois Norman, Carolyn Tabor, Denise Brown, Tee Fisher, Daphne VanBuren, Jackie Rodgers, Linda Hooks, Wil Rodgers, Phylis Jenkins and Richeeta Johnson.

Willow Springs is an 18 hole, par 62 links style course having that Scottish "feel", with mounding, deep greenside bunkering and "love grass" surrounding nearly every hole. An example of this 'love grass surrouinding a Par 3 is in the center of the collage. In designing the course, architect Al Janis wanted a course that would be both visually appealing, and provide a challenge to all golfers.

The ladies made time to do some shopping -- especially in the 'Marked Down' area and it was fun. This was a great outing and Barbara is to be commended for her choice in this play date.

GUNPOWDER GOLF COURSE

April 16, 2012

The Langston Ladies tried a new course this year – Gunpowder Golf Course in Laurel, MD, the oldest golf course in Prince George’s County. This course opened in 1956 and features narrow fairways to small (really small) undulating greens. In 1979 Gunpowder Golf Course partnered with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to bring affordable golf to Prince George’s County.

This is a rustic golf course and, on first approach, does not seem like such a good idea. But the nice things about the course show up quickly. The holes are often very original in design and the hilly, tree-lined holes offer great challenges and avoid the ‘sameness’ of some golf courses.

On a historic note, this course is located on a route established long ago during the period of the Revolutionary War. Gunpowder was produced at the Adelphi Mill and then transported along Powder Mill Road to Gunpowder Road and continued on to Ft. McHenry. This is a key link to the history of this area.

On this day, summer weather met our ladies at this course and we all enjoyed ourselves. Playing golf were Pat Williams, Lois Norman, Barbara Collaso, Tee Fisher, Irene Gaskins, Betty Brabble, Jackie Rodgers, Maria Walter, Denise Brown, Jackie (Denise’s guest), Pat Britt-Johnson, Will Rodgers and Pam Goatley.

Pat Williams is to be thanked for allowing us to experience and enjoy a new golf course.

ICE-BREAKER 2012

Marlton Golf Course -- April 2, 2012

Pictured above are some of the 14 ladies that showed up to welcome in the new season. They are:

Row I - Irene, Pat Williams, Daphne and Maria

Row II -- Tee, Lois N., Yolande, Pam Goatley and Pat Britt Johnson.

Not shown are Suprina, Wil, Denise, Regina Drake and Jackie.

Did you notice that most of our ladies wore their new shirts? We will be wearing them on the first outing of each month. If you don't have yours yet, check with Yolande.

And Yes! The weather was perfect for this outing and everyone was super-cheerful. The price was really right -- $23 (riding). A couple of ladies shied away from this outing because we were told that we had to repeat the Front Nine. As luck would have it, the aeration they planned for the Back Nine did not take place and we got to play the entire 18 at this low, low price. We are now ready for our second outing of the year -- Gunpowder Golf Course on April 16th.

(Irene, Hostess)

CONGRATULATIONS, PHYLLIS!

Phyllis Stevenson-Jenkins has been cited as the 'Golfer of the Week' by the African American Golfers Digest.

We are indeed proud of her and her achievements.

Our Annual Planning Breakfast

February 23, 2012 at the Nautilus (Crofton)

A great meeting with a good turnout of ladies and 70 degree weather in the afternoon!

We all love to go to the Nautilus where they serve wonderful breakfast foods -- omelets and Belgian Waffles, etc. We were all happy, also, because Roberta joined us. She had been ill for quite some time and it was a real joy to see her and fellowship with her. After placing our orders, Tee opened the meeting with prayer (Irene) and had Daphne, the chairperson of the Anniversary Ideas Committee, bring us her report. Working with Daphne on this committee were Tee, Frankie, Maria and Irene. The committee brought three choices to us to vote on and it was decided that October would be the preferred month to have this Golf celebration.

Yolande took over the chairing of our meeting and the group decided that 18 holes of golf is what we are striving for. It was suggested that our anniversary be dedicated to Julia Petross and Rose Sawyer, two strong members who did much to keep the group strong for many years. Daphne’s committee is to continue working as a Planning Committee and continue preparations for our big day. All ladies are invited to participate in this committee’s work to bring about the best possible result. Phyllis is going to look into our using Cross Creek Golf Course for this event – golf and meal.

Yolanda gave out the year-end gifts from last year for those who were not able to attend our Turkey shoot. Now all of us can look really good this year in our new shirts -- especially for our 30th anniversary celebration.

Other matters taken care of were:

• To let all know that 2012 dues are due by April 1st .

• LLGA joining the D.C. Consortium which is a group of golf clubs in the area who agree to allow their club’s golfing schedule/tournaments(s) to be published on the consortium’s website and calendar for all to see. The main purpose for this is to allow all clubs to support each other’s events from a planning and attendance standpoint. They will also display our club’s logo on their website showing that we are a partner and support the consortium. Our calendars will be kept so that everyone will know the club events of all clubs. Phyllis is our representative and will contact Alton Bell, the representative of the consortium, to ensure that this happens..

• The Fellowship through golf tournament held by Wake Robin and Langston Ladies will be held on Saturday July 28th at Enterprise.

• The Renditions Tournament seminar and with some golf will be held Wednesday March 7th ‘

• Everyone was asked to support the Wake Robin 75th Anniversary two-day affair to be held at the National Golf Club at Tantallon on Sunday, June 10th and Monday June 11th. More information will the sent by email later.

• The first Tee Tournament is scheduled for May 21st and the cost is $110. Further information will be sent out concerning this tournament.

• Lois Hall who had been very ill is doing quite well now and everyone was happy to hear this.

Attending this meeting were the following ladies -- –

Denise Brown, Phyllis Stevenson-Jenkins, Paulette Savoy, Barbara Collaso, Daphne VanBuren, Maria Walter, Pat Britt-Johnson, Tee Fisher, Vivian Grantham, Richetta Johnson, Wil Rodgers, Carolyn Tabor, Yolande Campbell, Irene Gaskins, Roberta Turner and Barbara Whiting-Wright.

Our next meeting will be held at Glendale on March 22nd at 9:30 am. At this meeting we will get updates from the Anniversary Committee and plan our regular golf play schedule for the year. After leaving the meeting at the Nautilus, a group of ladies went to Paint Branch, another group went to Bowie and a few others went to Enterprise to enjoy golfing in the phenomenal weather we had that day.

TURKEY SHOOT -- 2011

Henson Creek continues to be our bright spot for our end-of-the-year gatherings. This year the weather was extra nice and eleven of the fifteen ladies who came out played the course before settling down to a nice meal prepared by George, our favorite chef. Later we held our meeting.

Year-end gifts were given to all members and the Langston Ladies’ shirts were distributed. Yearly awards were made to Richetta for Best Putting, Linda Hooks for Most Improvement and Irene Gaskins as the Golfer of the Year.

(Paulette, pictured in the center with Barbara Collaso, is to be thanked for being our 'Photographer of the Day!')

A committee was formed to make plans for our 30th Anniversary next year. They are Daphne, the chairperson, with Irene, Tee, Yolande, Frankie and Maria assisting. We will have our next meeting at the Nautilus in Crofton, Maryland on February 23, 2012. This will be a 9:30 am breakfast meeting and the committee will make a report of their ideas for our Anniversary activity.

Yolande moved to Leisure World earlier this year and she has invited the Langston Ladies to play there. We plan to schedule it in our 2012 season.

Those members attending our Turkey Shoot were Yolande, Wil, Barbara C., Paulette, Pat Williams, Tee, Daphne, Ruth, Doretha, Suprina, Frankie, Maria and Irene. We had two guests – Pat Johnson and Sandy Dixon.

PINEHURST JOY!

October 7 - 10, 2011

A group of golfers headed down the road to Pinehurst, NC to enjoy an extended weekend of golf! The weekend had only good weather in store and ‘anticipation’ hovered among us. After arriving at our comfortable quarters, going out to the Bone Fish Grill for a festive dinner, shopping at various stores, everyone went home to rest up for our Saturday round of golf at . . .

SOUTHERN PINES

This is a Donald Ross classic in operation since 1906. This course was so enjoyable because what you saw was what you got . . . no abrupt surprises! This was a Par 74 for us ladies and it represented an excellent course to begin our play for the weekend. Then we played . . .

LEGACY

THIS COURSE IS A Nicklaus design and boasts the area’s ‘Best Finishing Hole’ by Pinehurst Magazine. It was a hole that (for us) had a surprise hazard in front of the green which kept most of us from earning a par. The only thing that bothered us about this course was its difficult rough. When a ball went into it, you had great difficulty finding it. We were allowed free drops if we went into the rough. This situation ‘throws you off’ if you are used to playing regulation golf.

TOBACCO ROAD

Then our fantasy golf adventure began!

This first photo shows you the beauty of the Southern Pines that stand around the clubhouse at Tobacco Road.

We should have been a bit suspicious when we saw so much sand!

The second shot shows a rustic and comfortable Pro Shop

loaded with goodies for ladies to purchase . . . and we puchased PLENTY!

This course with its amazing scenery opened in 1998 and was built partly where a sand quarry had existed. It is considered one of the 10 most difficult golf courses to play by GOLF DIGEST. Most holes are very unusual -- having deep, wide sand areas to carry over. In several instances, these huge sand areas were partially used as pathways to drive one’s cart. In another instance, you had to drive through the sand to get to your green. Hole #11 was huge and resembled the Grand Canyon. The fairway circled this ‘canyon’ and it was so easy to get a ball to go into this deep area. There were several greens either completely hidden until the last 50 yards or so or greens that were atop very high hilltops. On green #9, a ball would always return down the long, steep hill if you didn’t get it safely on the green. For me, this golf course was like an amusement park of daring rides -- and for us, holes to play. Tobacco Road is a big game of challenges, not measured by pars and bogies. It is definitely on my ‘Bucket List’ to play one more time!

Yes! This is a waste bunker and I think that is one of our players taking a short-cut to her ball. The pin is at the top of the picture.

Many of the bunkers had lots of steps and Wil counted 38 steps in one of the bunkers.

This is another example of waste bunkers and shows how careful you must be at all times.

Other gathering places for meals this weekend were Panera and Ruby Tuesday. Of course every chance we got, we would shop! For a town to be so small, all they had were shopping centers and restaurants. Lots of fun!

Enjoying this trip were Wil and Jackie Rodgers, Richetta Johnson, Phyllis Jenkins, Daphne Van Buren, Doretha Burns, Irene Gaskins and her son, Charles Watkins, our photographer who chronicled our every move with his camera and played golf. Daphne's sister, Sylvia Kirksey who is a non-golfer, came up for the weekend from Columbia, S.C. to spend some good sister time with Daphne. They both enjoyed this time together and we enjoyed Sylvia too. Cheryl Quick is to be thanked for putting this very nice experience together for us and Wil Rodgers is to be thanked for taking care of the golf arrangements that Cheryl made.

P O T O M A C -- R I D G E

October 3, 2011

Eight ladies played and enjoyed Potomac Ridge this day. This is one of our ‘Must Play’ courses each year. They were Irene, Daphne, Lois N., Wil, Pamela G., Tee, Phyllis and Richetta. This was a great day and everyone enjoyed themselves.

E N T E R P R I S E

Many thanks, Suprina, for allowing some play on our regular day -- October 17, 2011. The trip to Greendale had to be cancelled because of lack of participation. But Wil and a guest, Pam Wilson, joined Suprina at Enterprise where they enjoyed beautiful weather, a great course and a great game.

The September outing for the Langston Ladies at Fairview Hills Golf Club was quite successful. The price was right, the weather cooperated, the employees were friendly and treated us well. The course itself was challenging, but in good shape.

My thanks to the following ladies who made this day a success: Pamela Goatley, Linda Hooks, Lois Norman, Tee Fisher, Irene Gaskins, Wil Rodgers, Jan Barrow, Daphne Van Buren, Maria Walter, Pat Britt-Johnson, Denise Brown and myself.

LET ME INTRODUCE TO YOU . . . . NINA CATO, our club photographer!

My name is Romanini Cato. My business is Romanini Photography. I love what I do!

Here are a few things about me. I love the outdoors, and wild life. I enjoy capturing it's beauty through the lens of my camera.

I enjoy making people laugh. I am not a comedian, but have a great sense of humor.

I use a Nikon Digital Camera with a mean Nikkor Lens. I capture life as it comes, whether it's shooting a stunning landscape, rare moments with birds or other wildlife, a unique event or a special portrait. I also provide photography for two of my other passions in life -- golf and motorcycles.

My goal is to share the good feelings of life though great images in print. Pictures provide connections to moments in life for a long time. I want to help you remember the happy times for a life time.

I am married to a wonderful and supportive husband, and the proud mother of three beautiful and talented children.

My mission is to create a natural life-like image that you will treasure for a life time.

N O R T H W E S T - P A R K

August 22, 2011

Phyllis Jenkins is to be thanked for arranging this ‘rare’ outing to Northwest Park Golf Course in Silver Spring, MD. It has been several years since the Langston Ladies last played there. This course is not a ‘piece of cake’ because of its higher rating/slope and the ladies all enjoyed themselves. The condition of the course was very good and the price was right -- $30! Some plan to return soon and appreciate getting such a great course for the money.

The ladies all went to the Stained Glass Pub on Layhill Road afterwards. The pizza was great, was 1/2 price and the tuna was outstanding. Phyllis highly recommends this Pub and the group vowed to return because this was ‘The place to go to’.

Two guests accompanied the group: Jackie Davis and Regina Drake. Others enjoying this day were: Wil Rodgers, Betty Brabble, Lois Norman, Maria Walter, Daphne Van Buren, Richetta Johnson and Barbara Collaso. (Thanks Phyllis)

S H E N V A L E E -- -- 2 0 1 1

SHENVALEE – The 20th time! This was made possible by the one and only, Winnie Stanford! Sixty-six ladies showed up this year to pay tribute to Winnie and to have big-time FUN! The golfing was good, although our nine-hole scramble was rained out on Saturday evening. There was still a lot of golf that was played.

Several tributes were made to Winnie – cards, money, testimonials and flowers. Winnie, as usual with the help of Jean Miller Colbert through the years, made sure that a great meal was prepared and that lots of gifts were on hand for the day's participants after the Saturday 18-hole play. Other ladies, pictured above, worked quietly behind the scenes to surprise Winnie with the Friday and Saturday presentations that were made. These ladies pictured above are Pat Williams, Paulette Savoy, Jean Miller Colbert and Phyllis Jenkins. Winnie appreciated the Friday presentations, but was overwhelmed with the Plaque presentation on Saturday. Lucky we had a doctor on hand just in case! Pat Gaskins and Gloria Biagas, pictured in the collage below, assisted with the food, drink and scoring. Special Kudos go to Gloria Biagas for supplying the wonderful cakes each year.

The most unusual gift/presentation made to Winnie was a huge plaque that was installed on the No. 1 hole of the Olde Course. It is a permanent reminder of all of the good things she did for women's golf and for Shenvalee over the many years. The Staff at Shenvalee also had a great love for Winnie!

Other Langston Ladies who attended this weekend are pictured in the collage also. They are left to right:

Top Tier: Bernice Bradley, Paulette Savoy, Winnie Stanford and Pat williams;

Middle Tier: Dorethy Bennett, Irene Gaskins, Doretha Burns, Betty Brabble, Barbara Collaso, Pat Gaskins, Thelma Williams (Pat Gaskins' daughter) and Claudette Fluckus;

Bottom Tier: Mattie Gains, Irene, Tee Fisher, Angela Roberts, Daphne Van Buren, Phyllis Jenkins, Gloria Biagas and Loretta Easton.

CROSS CREEK GOLF OUTING – August 1, 2011

“Thanks to all the ladies who braved the heat to play at our Cross Creek outing. The “fun day…just play” format freed up everyone to try out their best trick shots and revel in the results of their risky shots. In spite of the heat, the golfing was fun as well as the fellowship that followed over lunch in the cool air conditioned club house.

Those attending were: Betty Brabble, Barbara Collaso, Irene Gaskins, Linda Hooks, Phyllis Stevenson-Jenkins, Pat Britt-Johnson (guest), Richetta Johnson, Nina Roma, Wil Rogers, Daphne Van Buren, Maria Walter and Pat Williams. Our favorite photographer, Nina Cato, took the pictures in the collage above. Hopefully we can get her picture next time. Surely, a good time was had by all.”

(Daphne)

(NOTE: I know you’re wondering what we got for our $36 that day. We had a continental breakfast, golf and a nice lunch! Not bad! Daphne is to be thanked for this enjoyable and frugal outing).

On July 18, 2011, 12 ladies played Bay Hills Golf Course in Arnold, Maryland.

The fees included a meal after play.

Eating after play is always fun and the group lingered for a good while chatting before hitting the road to go home.

Richetta asked everyone to keep a record of fairways hit and the total putts and the ‘Bragging Rights’ go to the following persons:

FAIRWAYS HIT

    • First Place – Barbara Collaso (13)

    • Second Place – Jan Barrow (12)

    • Third Place – Pat Williams (10)

TOTAL PUTTS --

    • First Place – Wil Rodgers (34)

    • Second Place – Betty Brabble (35)

    • Third Place – Irene Gaskins, Pat Williams and Barbara Collaso (37 putts each)

Other ladies playing this day were Linda Hooks, Phyllis Jenkins, Lois Norman, Corlette Faulk, Cee Powell and Denise Brown.

Thanks, Richetta, for hosting this nice outing! The games were fun also.

Ladies, our next outing is Monday, August 1, 2011 at Cross Creek Golf Course.

Blue Mash

Some of the ladies on the course -- June 6th

HOG NECK GOLF COURSE, Eastern, MD -- May 16, 2011

This was a great day with 16 ladies ‘ready to play golf.’ Two of our newest members are shown at the top of the picture collage – Linda Hooks and Nina Cato. The two ladies shown hitting their balls are Denise Brown (left) and Corlette Faulk (right). Denise, Linda, Wil Rodgers, Jackie Rodgers and Yolande Campbell are shown in the group photo at the bottom.

Shown in the photo above are Barbara Collaso, Lois Norman, Sandy Dixon, Doretha Burns, Betty Brabble and Pat Williams. Also attending but not shown in a photo are Richetta Johnson, Pamela Goatley and Irene Gaskins.

This was a Member-Guest Day and the money winners were Yolande and Wil who both brought in a new member who joined. Irene was a money winner also, bringing Sandy Dixon as a guest. Congratulations to Wil for planning this outing and for Yolande who worked on the format of the day.

Two other outings beside the initial Ice-Breaker were held on April 18th (Glenn Dale) and May 2nd (Forest Park in Baltimore.) A large group of ladies attended these outings also.

ICE-BREAKER 2011 -- LANGSTON GOLF COURSE

April 4, 2011

We opened up the season with a BIG BANG !

Everyone at Langston was happy to see us again and the staff was very pleasant as usual.

Ralf and Tom assisted us on this 'Fun Day'

Of course, we had to take a picture before going out on the course . . .

Jackie, Irene, Richetta, Tanya, Ruth Ann, Doretha, Pat W., Paulette and Corlette

Afterwards, we had lunch and a meeting chaired by Yolande.

Everyone ordered from the menu of fish dinners, hamburger dinners, etc., and we all settled down with the business at hand.

Shirts were discussed and we chose between three offerings that Barbara Wright brought to us. It won’t be long now when our ladies will be dressed uniformly when we go out on certain golf outings. The cost of the shirts and the sizes needed from each of you will be determined later.

The meeting ended with prize money being awarded for ‘Skins’ winners. These ladies were: Yolande (1), Richetta (1), Wil (1), Irene (1) and Ruth Ann (2). Ruth Ann also shot the lowest net score, with Richetta and Irene following.

Other ladies enjoying the day were --

Barbara C., Jackie, Barbara W., Debbie and Wil

Our goal is for members to have a lot of fun fellowshipping with each other and promoting competitive 18-hole play for ladies. There are various “Club Event” fun days played once a month with a Match Play Day in June. Club play shall be according to the United States Golf Association (USGA) with local rules as are in force and/or published on the course. The cost to play each “Club Event” fun day game is $4 for annual prizes.

Hostesses will send an e-mail to the Secretary requesting an e-mail be sent to members two weeks prior to play date. Members who wish to play must notify the Hostess (by e-mail or telephone) by deadline date set so that the correct number of tee times can be made. If the Hostess is not notified by a given deadline it may not be possible for additional tee times to be made to accommodate everyone. In the event of an emergency, please notify the hostess ASAP by telephone that you cannot play. When booking tee times the Hostess will check with each course for group & senior rates, local course rules, and aeration dates.

SCORING: Scorecards must be attested, signed and dated and provided to the President after each play date. Player scoring will be a certain percentage of handicaps on fun days and all other days are 100% handicap.

A GOLF SONG

Pat, Betty, Irene, Tee, Cheryl, Barbara and Daphne

The treasurer, Wil Rodgers, reported 14 members have rejoined LLGA for the year. Barbara Collaso agreed to follow up with members who have not renewed to tell them that we now have a new April 1st membership due date with a deadline of May 31st for renewing memberships. New members are also welcome. A Points System will be used to determine the type of prizes awarded to each member based upon their golf participation this year. The full membership will be asked to help formulate the new ‘Points Scale.’

Plans are for the group to host a comprehensive Rules & Etiquette of Golf Workshop this year at the Newton Mansion. This workshop will be open to the public and will use the USGA “Decisions on the Rules of Golf Book.” The topics of Etiquette, Definitions, and the Rules of Play will be discussed at length. Optional golf will be available. The workshop will be coordinated by Pat Williams and Betty Brabble, our Rules Chairperson, will moderate.

A date was set for the ‘Fellowship Tournament’ on May 21, 2012 with an emphasis on the spiritual element of fellowship. The day would include a prayer breakfast, golf, and awards luncheon. The event will be handicapped, using two sets of tees based on handicaps. A committee was formed to begin work on this event. Women golf clubs and associations from Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware will be invited. A committee was formed with Tee, Betty and Yolande. Other members are welcome to join. The playing schedule for the year will consist of 13 play dates and an Overnighter in October. Cheryl Quick volunteered to serve as the coordinator for this event and will bring golf package information to our next meeting.

We will be playing on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month from April through October and our final outing, the Turkey Shoot , will be held on November 3rd at Henson Creek Golf Course. We agreed to continue to play at an ‘away course’ and a ‘local course' alternately. Our “Ice Breaker” will be held April 4th at Langston Golf Course. All the ladies present volunteered to host a play date. More members are needed as hostesses for the months of July, August, September, and October.

It was moved and passed that Dottie Bennett, a long time LLGA member, become an honorary member of LLGA.

A community service project will be considered at our next meeting which will be a brunch held Monday, March 21st, 11:00 a.m. at Wegman’s Café, 9001 McHugh Drive, Lanham, MD.

See You Then!

Another Fresh Golf Joke

Golfers Are Wonderful People, yes?

A husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses with a heart attack! "Help me dear," she groans to her husband.

The husband calls 911 on his cell phone, talks for a few minutes, picks up his putter and lines up his putt.

His wife raises her head off the green and stares at him. "I'm dying here and you're putting?"

"Don't worry dear," says the husband calmly, "they found a doctor on the second hole and he's coming to help you.

"Well, how long will it take for him to get here?" she asks feebly.

"No time at all," says her husband. "Everybody's already agreed to let him play through."

GOLF JOKES

Police are called to an apartment and find a woman holding a bloody 5-iron standing over a lifeless man.

The detective asks, 'Ma'am, is that your husband?'

'Yes' says the woman.

'Did you hit him with that golf club?

'Yes, yes, I did.'

The woman begins to sob, drops the club, and puts her, hands on her face.

'How many times did you hit him?'

'I don't know, five, six, maybe seven times.....just put me down for a five.'

The bride came down the aisle and when she reached the altar, the groom was standing there with his golf bag and clubs at his side.

She said:' What are your golf clubs doing here'?

He looked her right in the eye and said, 'This isn't going to take all day, is it?'
