Pulmonary Hypertension, an Incurable Disease Pulmonary Hypertension is an incurable disease of the heart and lungs. Without treatment, it is terminal. The only known "cure" for Pulmonary Hypertension is transplantation of the lungs, sometimes of the heart and lungs. Pulmonary Hypertension hits mostly women in their child bearing years, however, infants, children, men and the elderly have been stricken with the disease. The symptoms of Pulmonary Hypertension are so much like any other disease, that is so often misdiagnosed for years. Heart palpitations, Shortness of breath, exhaustion, passing out and blue lips are just some of the symptoms of PH. There are many drugs available at this time for the treatment of PH, however, there isn't a cure yet. That doesn't mean there isn't any hope. At diagnosis, so many times, we are told we have two to five years to live. I have been diagnosed for 11 yrs now, and am doing very well. I'm working part time and living my life like I have never before.

About Me
I was diagnosed on September 6, 1998 at the age of 28. I have three children, who at the time were 2 yrs old, 5 yrs old and 6 yrs old. I was immediately put on Flolan and stayed on it for 4 years. Flolan saved my life. I was weaned off of Flolan and put on Tracleer which I have been on ever since. Tracleer has given me such freedom! I don’t even feel sick. I moved in August of 2008 with my daughter to Silver Spring, where I took over the Silver Spring Support Group. My sister Debbie Castro (the Director of Volunteer Services at PHA) asked if I could start a DC group because of the need there. Of course I jumped at the chance to help people in the most beautiful city in the country! Everyone always talks about the hard times with PH, but I also like to talk about the good things that have happened to me since my diagnosis. I have met so many wonderful friends with PH both online and in person! I have learned to be more patient with people who may or may not look sick. I have also learned to slow down and smell the roses, see the scenery around me and love where I am. Alex Flipse
 About the Flu
Flu Shot Season This year as always, we will need our flu shots. ““If you have a chronic health condition, you should be among the first to get a flu shot every year.” Each year in the United States, on average: • More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications; • 20,000 of those hospitalized are children younger than 5 years old; • 36,000 people die from flu. Flu Symptoms Remember the acronym FACTS FEVER ACHES CHILLS TIREDNESS SUDDEN SYMPTOMS The common symptoms of the flu include: • Fever (usually high) • Headache • Muscle aches • Chills • Extreme tiredness • Dry cough • Runny nose may also occur but is more common in children than adults • Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, may also occur but are more common in children than adults You don’t need to experience all of these symptoms to have the flu. If you have one or two, it's recommended that you see your doctor. There are five main options that people use to fight the flu — vaccines, antivirals, antibiotics, over-the-counter treatments, and non-medical alternatives
