Saturday Afternoon at the Movies
My story starts in 1948. I was living in the big city and it was still near enough to the Big War (WWII) that folks were trying to get their lives back to normal. I was 7 yrs old. AND that was the year I discovered COWBOY MOVIES !
We didn't have a car, we didn't have very much money, and yes children there was no TV. I liked to play baseball on the corner lot, would fight at the drop of a hat and generally raised as much heck as a 7 yr old could get away with in 1948 (and believe me it wasn't much). Then one Saturday afternoon my Mom said, "Let's take a little walk" (or something like that). I was probably kicking and screaming as she dragged me the 3 miles or so to the Waverly Theater. And I have thanked my dear ole MOM ever since, because it was here that I began my love affair with cartoons, serials, selected short subjects AND the. . . . COWBOY MOVIE.
I was really hooked (and so was my Mom) because for the next few years, until we moved from town, we made that journey to the Old West just about every weekend.
It has been a long and wonderful love affair, and I still feel that same old thrill every time I see that cowboy ride off into the sunset, or some pistolero pull his Stetson down over his eyes and stride down some sunbaked street to meet his fate.
If you feel the same way I do, then I hope this page brings back some long forgotten memories. You will find some great internet sites, with Trivia, Lists, Posters, and some surprises too. Just click on the links.
Oh Yeah !. . . .Seems like every film buff has his list of favorites - well so does the Grizz, and you'll find it here. Feel free to send me the name of your favorite Western
Movie and maybe we'll start a "Campsite list of favorites" And while you're at it tell me about the worst western you have ever seen.
AND ......if you want to see something a little different and haven't seen Tom Berringer in "Rustler's Rhapsody "(1985) do your self a favor and rent it ...it's a hoot.

You will no doubt notice that OPEN RANGE now stands at the top of the list. This is a great movie, starring Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner AND . . . . . I do believe Pards that I have found a new favorite movie. If you missed this one at the local movie house, the vidio/DVD will be out just in time for Christmas. Don't let it slip by. This flick has the best Movie gunfight I have seen.
