After what seemed months of nothing but rain, rain and more rain, and shoot cancelations one after another the week of Thunder Valley Days 2003 finally arrived. AND LO AND BEHOLD. . . .SUNSHINE ! All three days of the match went off under a beautiful (but warm) sky. That's the way we like it, hot days and plenty of hot shooters. But as you may have guessed it was all too good to be true. Just as the awards dinner got under way the hotel fire alarms sounded (not a drill either) and the assembled company of shooters spent the next 3 hrs. standing in the parking lot. Finally, soneone had the presence of mind to get the fire department's permission to sneak the awards and microphone out onto the parking lot. . . . . . .and that cowboys is where the 2003 MD State SASS championship awards ceremony took place.
Thunder Valley Days, The Maryland State Championship Match for 2000 starts off with a blast at the range of the Damascus Wildlife Rangers in Damascus MD . Three days of Cowboy fun and companionship.
After a week of rain, rain and more rain, 127 cowboys & cowgirls converged on the range of the Damascus Wildlife Rangers on Thursday the 27th of April. A little drizzle for this day of side matches and paperwork, but from then on the cowboy gods smiled down upon the prairies of Damascus. The weather became warmer and sunnier with each passing day.
It was a time for some good shootin' (and some not so good shootin') and a time to renew some friendships with pards that we hadn't seen for awhile.
There were five main stages on both friday and Saturday and everyone seemed to agree that whoever was responsible for writing some of the stages, they surely have too much time on their hands. But all kidding aside, the senerios were original and lots of fun. A BBQ dinner after Fridays stages gave folks a chance to make their Friday excuses before the scores were posted. Another day of great shooting and great weather on Saturday, followed by a fine awards dinner at the Gaithersburg Holiday Inn.

THUNDER VALLEY DAYS 2002
GRIZZLY JOE along with SASS #1 JUDGE ROY BEAN and the match boss CHUCKEROO
Thunder Valley Days grows a little more each year with 146 shooters (give or take) on the line this year. After a brutal summer we were rewarded with more of the same weather for all three match days - Mid 90's temperatures along with our old pard, mid 90's humidity. The plains never like this! It was a job in itself just to keep the water barrels filled. But when the smoke cleared and the sweat dried we found that TWINN was the overall match winner for the 3rd straight year and CODY CONAGHER was for the 2nd year in a row, Maryland Men's Champ. But there was a new queen in the winner's circle, with the crowning of RUBY RED as the Ladies Maryland State Cowboy Action Shooter. A tip of the ten gallon hat to all three winners.
