DG Ted's Corner

by DG Ted Ladd, District Governor 22-C

Lion Ann and I wish all of you a very happy and prosperous New Year. There are many things to work on in this New Year, and I want to tell you about them.

The District 22-C Bull Throwers award is a rare honor bestowed on one member of District 22-C each year. You can find a description of the award on page 84 of our current roster book. Details on preparing a recommendation are presented more explicitly in the District 22-C By-Laws. Please consider an outstanding Lion in your Club who meets the criteria specified in the By-Laws, and then write a winning recommendation to be considered by the Bull Throwers award committee. Make this effort to honor one of your outstanding members. Nominations should be forwarded to Lion Ron Seibel, Chairperson of the Bull Throwers Award Committee, by 1 April.

The District 22-C Honor Roll is another way to honor outstanding Lions and Lionesses. Details are outlined on page 83 of the current roster book. Each Club is invited to nominate one outstanding member for this honor. Recommendations should be sent to VDG Paul Hawkins, Chairperson of the Honor Roll Committee, by 1 April.

22-C Night will be on Saturday, April 19, 2008. Once again we intend to honor one member from each Club in the District. Honorees will be identified as District 22-C All-Stars, and each will receive a beautiful lapel pin citing that recognition. Each Club is asked to identify their member of the All Star Team, and send the name of that member to Lioness Nancy Watson by March 17, 2008.

Membership is always a serious consideration. Fluctuations in membership since 1 July indicate we have taken in lots of new members, but at the same time have lost even more. Some Clubs, meanwhile, have made notable progress in their membership. One of these is Mount Rainier-Brentwood, which started the year with 25 members and has since risen to 33. Another is Gaithersburg, which started with 24 and has grown to 32. Neither Club has lost a member. Suburban has increased by four, and seven additional Clubs have increased membership by one, two, or even three members. Seventeen additional Clubs have maintained their membership since July 1, and a total of 10 Clubs have dropped just one member since July 1. In summary, we have taken in 76 new members since July 1, but meanwhile lost a total of 152, for a net loss of 76. I believe we will make up that deficit. Let's work together and make that happen.

Leos from District 22-C submitted a total of 12 peace posters this year. The winning entry was that of 13-year old Kevin Mei of the Rocky Hill Middle School Leo Club, sponsored by the Damascus Lions. The entry was submitted in the Multiple District-22 contest and tied for second place. Congratulations to Leo Kevin Mei for his creative work, and to the Rocky Hill Middle School Leo Club, and the Damascus Lions Club.

Once again, Lion Ann and I express our sincere wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year. You make the difference.

Yours in Lionism,

DG Ted Ladd (2/22)

New Member Orientations Two Locations To Be Held

New Lions are required to attend New Member Orientation to introduce them to all of the aspects of becoming a Lion.

There will be a new member orientation class on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at 7 pm. It will be held at the Rockville United Methodist Church located on Montgomery Avenue in Rockville. New members and their sponsors are encouraged to attend. PDGs Bill Lynch and Ken Watson will conduct the training. Dinner will be included. Please check with Lion Bill Jamison for more information.

There will be a group orientation held during the Leonardtown Lions Club regular meeting on February 6, 2008. District Governor Ladd will be conducting the orientation so it should be very well done and interesting. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM at the Old Breton Inn, Breton Bay just outside of Leonardtown.

All new members should make every effort to attend since it is being held down here in the County, eliminating the need to travel North. (2/22)

CSFII Update

We are pleased and proud to announce that 22-C is nearing 100% club participation in support of Campaign SightFirst II. Only two clubs have not joined the continuing crusade against darkness, and we are confident they soon will. This is an unprecedented accomplishment for this or any District. Districts 22-B and 22-W have already exceeded what they raised in CSF I, and are still going.

Fellow Lions, Lionesses and LEO's, CSFII isn't just about what happens half way around the world. It is about what is happening on your own street. There is not a club anywhere in the world that, alone, can defeat glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, refractive error, low vision problems, rehabilitation of the blind just in it's own service area. That is why we are attacking these enemies of sight, and more, all of us together all over the world. That is the only way we will control or defeat them.

It is not too late. We have until the end of this upcoming June to join the crusade, and up to five years from that point to fulfill a pledge. The time is now. The stakes are high. The enemies of sight will not wait and honor no boundaries. Nor can we. Talk to your CSFII District Coordinator or Group Coordinator listed in your District Roster book, or contact me.

Lions Camp Merrick Elects New Officers

Lions Camp Merrick (LCM), the overnight camp for special needs kids near Nanjemoy, Maryland recently installed new officers and Board members. The election and installation of officers took place at the Center for the Deaf in Landover Hills, Md. during a regularly scheduled Board meeting.

Leading the organization is president Sandi Halterman from Upper Marlboro, first vice president Mark Leroux from Clinton, second vice president James Dodson from Lusby, secretary Richard Tameris from Fort Washington and treasurer Jim Glynn from Ellicott City - all in Maryland. Immediate past president Claude "Bud" Humbert, II from Charlotte Hall and legal counsel Joseph Gaffigan from Silver Spring round out the Board officers who will serve during the 2007 - 2009 term.

"I am excited to have this opportunity to continue to serve Lions Camp Merrick," stated president Sandi Halterman, "and I look forward to working with many dedicated people who give their time, talents and resources to help the kids who are deaf, blind and / or have diabetes."

Halterman has been a Board member for several years and recently served as the first vice president. She is active in the Gateway Lions Club in Upper Marlboro, Md., as well as at the Lions Multiple District level (22-C) where she serves as membership chair in the Membership, Extension, Retention and Leadership development (MERL) committee.

The Lions Camp Merrick Board of Directors is comprised of 22 elected members plus council representatives from the 58 Lions Clubs throughout Washington, D.C., and the Maryland counties of Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George's, St. Mary's that make up the Lions Multiple District 22-C. The Board meets five times per year at the Center for the Deaf in Landover Hill and is responsible for the oversight, policy and strategic planning for Lions Camp Merrick.

The camp is a popular venue for several diverse groups that include youth and adults with special needs during the summer camping season as well as retreats for other groups in the spring, fall and winter. Throughout the year, Boy Scout and Girl Scouts, the 4-H, school groups, business retreats, family reunions and scrapbookers make LCM their favorite weekend or week long get-away. Each year, over 3,500 youth and adults stay at LCM and enjoy activities, such as, canoeing, swimming, archery, wall climbing, challenge ropes course, hiking, bird watching, fishing and more.

For information about LCM programs for deaf, blind or diabetic youth call 301-645-5616, e-mail cmpmerrick@ aol.com or visit the web site at www.lionscampmerrick.org. To book a retreat for your group in the spring or fall, call the Camp Administrator Heather Magoon at 301-870-5858.

Seasons Greetings from Lions Camp Merrick

The Holiday Season is the traditional time to remember our friends, new and old, and the organizations that have been so important to our camp and made our jobs more enjoyable. We have been blessed to have many dedicated supporters helping us throughout the year, and thanks to your help, we have had a positive impact on the lives of young campers.

We'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your encouragement and generous support - whether it was volunteering time, giving money or sending a child to camp. We would not be able to develop the quality programs we produce without the strong camp family network.

This past year, we made commitments to improve our programs, staff and camp ... and we made significant progress. We ran successful deaf and diabetes camps and initiated plans for a blind youth camp in 2008. Heather Magoon attended training and conferences in Georgia and Iowa. We finished the renovations to the recreation hall and camp office, and later we created a multi-purpose meeting room and staff quarters. We brought in a new cabin and made structural repairs to one rustic cabin. Work was done on the entrance road, the health center was remodeled and the pool rededicated. In addition to these projects we've raised funds to create a Patriots Circle featuring engraved brick pavers around the U.S. Flag pole and to install a new, expanded waste water treatment system.

Elections were held last May and the officers assumed their duties at the beginning of the fiscal year in October. We look forward to working with president Sandi Halterman, 1st VP Mark Leroux, 2nd VP Jim Dodson, secretary Rich Tameris, treasurer Jim Glynn, and the new Board of Directors. We also extend our appreciation to immediate past president Bud Humbert for his past leadership.

The summer programs were enjoyed by nearly 350 special needs campers. Our cadre of counselors, program and medical staff did a terrific job making sure the campers were safe and had lots of fun. Here again, we enjoyed support from the Lions throughout Multiple District 22 along with the American Diabetes Association and several other foundations and agencies.

Camp is the place to make and renew friendships while enjoying fun and games during the summer break. We work hard helping kids make memories that will last a lifetime, and we also work hard running the camp as a business. In addition to the many licenses and permits we must secure, we also have to maintain several certifications. This past summer, the American Camp Association performed an extensive review of our entire operation and once again, we passed ACA's accreditation inspection.

The annual fundraising gala this past September featured talented local contestants who performed before a sell out crowd of 340 guests. We enjoyed record numbers all around, thanks to the generous sponsors, silent auction donors, talented participants, ticket buyers and the gala committee.

In October, Lions Camp Merrick hosted the 28th annual Conference of Lions Camps. This conference brought 15 Lions camps together from across the United States to participate, learn and share best practices. Thirty representatives from those camps enjoyed an informative program, excellent meals, sightseeing in Washington, D.C., entertainment and camaraderie. Greg Floberg was elected CLC president for the coming year.

Overall, LCM had another fun, safe, successful year and made many more memories to cherish for years to come. We want to extend our best wishes during the holiday season to you and your loved ones and may your New Year be filled with good health, prosperity and happiness.

Happy Holidays!

Gregory V. Floberg, Development / Executive Director
Heather Magoon, Camp Administrator
Patricia Moffat, Executive Assistant
