Welcome to the La Plata Lions Club website, based out of La Plata, Maryland! Everyone can probably relate to the experience of driving into the city/town limits and seeing very large signs that have a variety of association logos attached: Lions Club, Rotary International, Kiwanis, Moose, Elk, etc. But how many of you have an understanding of what each of these associations represent? That's the purpose of this site...to let people living in southern Maryland know what the Lions Club is all about!
In a nutshell, we are about eyesight. We help the blind, we help the vision impaired, we believe in early testing to detect potential eyesight disorders, and we believe in helping the community. We have also grown to help those who are hearing impaired, as well as those who are diabetic.
The members of the La Plata Lions Club consists of people who have an interest in our community and who are willing to contribute their time, talent and energy toward making La Plata and the world a better place to live. We also enjoy a good deal of fun and fellowship at our dinner meetings and activities.
The La Plata Lions Club continues its long tradition of active community involvement, recognizing needs wherever they may be and working hard to meet them. Over the years, we have devoted the majority of our service efforts to three general areas of activities: youth, community service, and health. Together with other area Lions Clubs we support a number of regional and International service projects.
Many people have benefited from the work of the La Plata Lions Club. Our help goes both to individuals and to organizations.
SUPPORT PROVIDED
The La Plata Lions Club provides support to the following programs and activities: Vision Exams and Eyeglasses for Needy Individuals, Hearing Exams and Reconditioned Hearing Aids for Needy Individuals, Collection of Discarded Eyeglasses and Hearing Aids
Eye mobile Visits, Dog Guide Training for the Blind, Bloodmobile Visits, Lions Clubs International Foundation, Food Baskets for Needy Families, Installation of Christmas Lighting in the
Town and on Route 301, Manpower for Charles County Fair Gates, Charles County Rescue Squad, Lions International Peace Poster Contests, Town Christmas Celebrations
Scholarships for High School Seniors, District 22-C Youth Band, Science Fair Judging, Hospice of Charles County, Civista Hospital, Little League, Boy Scouts, Richard R. Clark Senior Center and support to the United Way of Charles County.
HOW WE ARE ORGANIZED
About 60 Lions Clubs are under the organizational guidance of District 22-C, which encompasses Washington, DC, and the Maryland counties of Montgomery, Prince Georges, Calvert, St. Mary's, and Charles.
The La Plata Lions Club consists of a Board of Directors, who are responsible for the overall direction of the Club. Members have an active role in all Club activities through their role on various committees and groups. The La Plata Lions Club never charges for the services we provide. While fund raising is necessary to sustain our ability
to serve the community's needs, we believe that the public should not simply be asked for its financial support without getting something in return. We make every effort to assure that our major fund raising activities are not just financially successful but that they also provide the community with a fair measure of enjoyment or other value received. All money raised from the public for our service work is used exclusively for that purpose. Fund raising expenses are held to a minimum. All internal expenses of the Club are borne by the members.

The La Plata Lions Club meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7 pm at El Ranchito Restaurant, La Plata.
