Every Monday morning, a gathering of La Plata residents meets at the Starbucks on the corner of US 301 and Maryland Route 6.

Starting in November the group will discuss some of the most widely discussed questions of our day. For ten weeks, skipping the week between Christmas and New Year’s, those who gather will be addressing questions identified as The Ten BIG Questions of Life. Everyone is invited to join in on the discussion and to bring any materials they wish to share to enlighten the participants and to express one’s opinions. The group which has been meeting since March 2009, has had random discussion up to now. Hoping to be a little more focused, and to include a larger circle or participants the group has decided to publicize their topics list to a wider audience.

The discussions are lightly moderated by Bruce Jones, who in promotional materials has dubbed himself a “Philosopher-in-Residence” as he hosts most of the gatherings. All are invited to come share their wisdom, insight and personal philosophy. Here is a listing of the topics and dates:

November 23 Ethical Dilemmas: Given the times we live in and the challenges we face, how do we decide between right and wrong?

November 30 Extra-Terrestial Life: Does life exist beyond our planet? Is humanity alone? Do you believe ET has visited or will ever visit our planet.

December 7 Life After Death: Do you think there is something “on the other side?” How can we know? What do you believe about the beyond?

December 14 Time Travel: Is it possible? When will we be able to do it? What impact will that have on life, as we know it?

December 21 Creation vs. Evolution: Do they contradict each other? Which is true? How can we know for sure?

January 4 The Big Bang Theory: How did the universe begin? What caused it? Why do we think it happened?

January 11 The Meaning of Life: Why are we hear? Does life have meaning? What are we here for, and does it matter?

Several members of La Plata United Methodist Church belong to the La Plata Lions Club. We would like to help promote this worthy fundraiser that benefits citizens in southern Maryland. This year you can purchase the following:

RUBY RED GRAPEFRUIT = $17.00/box. Each box usually contains 18 Ruby Reds per box

NAVEL ORANGES = $17.00/box. Each box usually contains 28-40 Navels per box.

HOLIDAY FRUIT TRAY = $24.00/box. This festive box contains a mix of 12 Ruby Reds, 12 Navels, and 12 Red Delicious Apples.

All fruit comes in 20 lb boxes.

All orders must be received by November 19, 2009. The fruit is expected to be available on or about December 5th, 2009, for pick-up. Pre-order receipt is required at pick-up.
