NURTURING MINISTRIES

The purpose of the Worship Committee is to strengthen our corporate worship experience by evaluating our regular services, monitoring the roles of greeters, ushers, acolytes and childcare providers, reflecting on the contributions of choirs and planning special services. The Worship Committee meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.. For more information, please contact Rita Riley, Chairperson; Ushers: Ed McKenzie; Altar Guild: Kathy Lauber; and Flowers: Margaret Dunlap.

What does Christmas mean? The answer depends on who you ask. When thinking of Christmas many things come to mind. The birth of Christ is the obvious answer, but many other thoughts and memories also come to mind: cookies baking in the oven, Christmas presents being wrapped, carols being sung, pageants being attended, and of course a beautifully decorated church.

As chairman of the Altar Guild I have many people to thank that have made this Christmas a special one: Bill and Rita Riley for setting up all the trees, decorating the Christmas tree, and hanging the banners; Kathie Evans for making the beautiful wreaths and pew decorations; Rollie Hower for designing and making the poinsettia stand in the new entrance; Barbara Merrick for coordinating the purchase of the poinsettias, and the rest of the committee for putting all the decorations in place. My thanks to you all for a job well done.

Kathy Lauber

We have a lot of fun throughout the year socializing with others. We call ourselves the Rock-n-Rollers, which is a little more informal than the title "Adult Fellowship". The Rock-n-Roller group provides recreational opportunities for church members so that they become better acquainted. For more information please contact Anne Buckler or Barbara Merrick.

Adult Classes provide opportunities on Sunday morning or during the week for adults to grow in their faith or understanding of the Bible. For more information, please contact Bright Thompson at the church office, 301-934-2288.

In 1965, Dr. Hower was assigned to the Dead Sea Scrolls project. He became so thoroughly fascinated by the scrolls that he spent many hours studying not only the scrolls but all of the ancient manuscripts of that time period. The topics discussed each week vary, but are educational and very fascinating! Come in and joind in on our disccussion! You won't regret it!

The Coordinator, Habitat for Humanity organizes volunteers to support the Habitat for Humanity ministry of providing affordable housing opportunities for low income families in our community. This month I ask that each person in the congregation take a few minutes each week to pray for the mission of Habitat for Humanity in Charles County. Across our nation, Habitat affiliates build simple, decent homes for families who wouldn't otherwise have a safe, permanent home they can afford. Undoubtedly you've heard about the many families here in Charles County who were displaced from the Stardust hotel. It was the cheapest housing alternative available for many of them. But, for about the same amount as families paid to stay at the Stardust, they could make a mortgage payment on a Habitat home!

In order to be effective, a Habitat affiliate needs at least 10 to 12 committed Board members who are focused on fulfilling a piece of the organization's work. Commitment is even more important than having skills in a particular area. Our Charles County Habitat needs several more of God's servants whose hearts are truly set on serving through this ministry. Do you sense that God is calling you to participate in this mission, or do you know someone who might? Will you please join me in praying that God will provide guidance to our Habitat affiliate, and that He will bring forth several energetic and committed people who will provide leadership to move our Habitat forward.

The purpose of the Point of Change and Jail and Street Ministry is to provide a liaison between the Prison Ministries and the congregation. In order to carry on this ministry, we are asking individuals, couples, or groups to sign-up to host a week of "Friendship Time". The purpose of the Cemetery Committee is to maintain the church cemetery in Dentsville. We are asking for your help in maintaining the Cemetery this year. During the grass cutting season (April - October), we are asking that flowers be kept off the ground in order to efficiently trim grave sites. This will make the grounds look much neater. We ask that you place flowers on top of the tombstone or in vases that are on sides of stones. Last year we placed trash bins near both entrances in which to place old flowers. They were not used very much by members. This is an on-going problem. Please discard old flowers in the trash cans instead of the edge of the woods. It is good stewardship and it prevents littering. If each person does their part, the problem will go away. The Cemetery Committee will be working on the driveway this year; it needs to be widened. We are making progress and with everyone's help, we can continue to improve our families resting place. Thank you. For more information, contact Phyllis Coombs.
