Welcome to "The Lady Cardinals" website.

We are one of the 9,000 chapters that registered with the Red Hat Society in February, 2004 when our Queen Mum Barbara registered the Chapter. The 9,000 enrollment was the record for chapters registered in one month! There are now over 20,000 chapters in the Red Hat Society! Our chapter membership has reached 45 and unfortunately, we are not accepting new members at this time. It is very hard to find locations in our area that will accept this many ladies at lunch time.

We get together  the first Wednesday of every other month (more if possible) for a luncheon. Who knows, however, what might happen if a new and exciting idea should suddenly make its home in our red hats! We are always on the lookout for fun things to do, places to go and adventures to have. (Although just living here in the Washington, DC area is an adventure!)

The Red Hat Society is a fun oriented group of ladies who have always been known as "Someone's wife, someone's mother, the den mother, the girl scout leader, the homework helper, the last-minute "But, Mom, I NEED it tommorrow" costume maker, etc." Now it is our turn. As Ruby Red-hat says "It's all about me." (Ruby is the official mascot of the Red Hat Society. She is used here with permission and is the adorable little lady pictured wearing a red hat, purple robe and pink fuzzy slippers). After all, this is a group of ladies that influenced Mars to make PURPLE M&M's! We are Ladies with Hat-atudes!

Visitors

If you are visiting the Gaithersburg, Maryland area and are having Red Hat withdrawall symptoms please contact Queen Mum Barbara and we will see if some of us can meet you and "brush brims" at the very least. We might even join you for an "adult" beverage!

Chapter Dues

At this time we do not "do" dues. We do however accept voluntary donations at each function. These monies go to help pay for luncheon favors, postage, etc.

"The Red Hat Society: Fun and Friendship After Fifty" by Sue Ellen Cooper Ladies I have read this book twice. I have laughed, cried, and laughed and cried again. This book is a MUST HAVE and other folks agree because it is now #3 on the New York Times best seller list. Trust me, you will enjoy this book!

How Our Chapter Mascot Found US!!

In May I was in the Women's Exchange in Wayne, PA (a deeelightful shop). After having purchased a lovely purple, lavender and red boa knitted with eyelash yarn, I mentioned I was the Queen Mum of our Red Hat Chapter in Gaithersburg, Md, and that I was on a Red Hat Quest. A charming lady directed me to the Consignment Shop next door.

I climbed (pulled, at least with MY knees) up the stairs and YES, I found a hat! Suddenly the door burst open and the charming lady from the Women's Exchange thrust a bear into my hands and said "You have to take her, she's wearing purple and red!" Well she WAS wearing a Red Felt Hat and purple cape so what could I do? Naturally, I agreed to take the bear.

On the long drive home back to Gaithersburg, MD she rode in a place of honor on a down-filled pillow. (It was actually my husband's pillow and HE doesn't share his pillow with just ANYONE!)

During the drive to Maryland, the little bear told me her story.

WHO IS THAT

UNDER THAT RED FELT HAT???

Lady BEARtha Cardinella!

Lady BEARtha Cardinella's Story
In a small shop called the Women's Exchange in the small but very friendly, town of Wayne,Pa, lived a small bear. The little bear had no friends of her own as all the other bears in the shop had found new homes.

Through the window of the Women's Exchange the little bear looked at everyone passing by. All these people were laughing and chatting.

"What fun that must be." She thought. "I wish I had someone to walk with and be with but I am the last bear in the shop."

Just then she saw a group of ladies wearing red hats and purple dresses walking arm in arm, laughing, and having such a good time. "Hmmm,' she thought, 'If I had a red hat and purple dress maybe someone would love me."

As luck would have it, Cinderella was off on her honeymoon and Cindy's fairy godmother was bored. She heard the little bear's wishes and POOF! with one swish of her magic wand, and some well placed glittering (what else) fairy dust, the little bear found she was wearing a beautiful red felt hat with purple roses on it and she had a purple cape of the softest felt! She also had a small bouquet of purple roses in her hand, uh, paw.

The little bear sneezed suddenly, "Achoo!" Then she laughed, realizing that a fluffy, flirty, fabulous, feathery red boa was draped around her neck and it tickled her nose! When she sneezed and laughed, the little bear lost her balance and fell, PLOP, right onto a lovely pair of green velvet bedroom slippers. The charming lady in the Women's Exchange heard the tiny sneeze and laugh and found the little bear resting in one of the slippers. "Oh my!' she exclaimed, 'I have just the person for you!"

She scooped the little bear up and holding onto her very carefully, so as not to knock her hat off, she ran up the stairs next door (she was a lot younger, and agile, as well as being charming).

When she found the lady who just had left the Women's Exchange, she quickly extended the bear. "You must take her,' said the charming, (and let us not forget agile) lady, 'She is wearing red and purple!"

"Well,' said our Queen Mum, 'You ARE wearing the royal colors, would you like to become our royal mascot and someday perhaps meet Ruby Red-Hat?"

"Oh yes," the little bear said, "But I cannot remember my name."

"Oh, don't worry about that!" said Queen Mum Barbara, "That only means you are REALLY one of us, we can't remember who we are either, sometimes." She laughed while she said it though. "Besides, we will have a contest and we will find you a new name, one that matches your personality. What do you say to that?"

The little bear thought it was wonderful and knew that she would now have lots of new friends that would help, support her and love her."

At our luncheon on June 2, 2004, our little mascot was given a name. Many lovely names were suggested but "Lady BEARtha Cardinella" was finally decided upon. Lady BEARtha was SO excited! She met each member individually and would like everyone to know how happy she is to be a member of The Lady Cardinals. Not only does she plan on attending every meeting, she will accompany the Chapter on any outings they may have and is already making a list of things to take to Las Vegas for the Convention next year. Stay tuned for her further adventures!

I hope you have enjoyed Lady BEARtha Cardinella's story! We will be sure to keep everyone posted on her further adventures.
