GREETINGS!

The Katahdin Wings is the Maine chapter of the International Organization of Women Pilots, Inc. more widely known as The Ninety-Nines. Katahdin Wings was started in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization to provide a local outlet for women pilots and women student pilots of Maine to gather and share their love of flying, and is one of three chapters that constitute the New England Section. For 2009 we try typically meeting on the first THURSDAY of each month from 6:30 pm to 8:30 at varying locations throughout Southern Maine. Occasionally we meet on Saturday morning from 10am to noon at an airport further away to afford us a chance for a "fly-to" meeting. Our members include women who fly professionally, as well as those who fly for fun. We encourage visitors, male or female, young or less young, to join us at meetings. Please feel free to attend a meeting to see what we're all about.

It is our mission to encourage not only other women pilots in our community, but to also be an educational resource for school teachers and community leaders. We also offer financial support in the form of scholarships to qualifying girls and boys to attend ACE Camp. In the aviation community, we offer organized flying events and safety seminars.

KATAHDIN WINGS GOING STRONG IN 2009

Katahdin Wings proudly show off the completed compass rose.

On May 3, 2009, eleven determined women pilots converged on Eastern Slopes Regional Airport in Fryeburg Maine with a mission: complete a 100-foot in diameter compass rose. The Katahdin Wings upheld a unique tradition of The Ninety-Nines known as "Airmarking" by successfully completing this project in a mere five hours. With chalk line and measuring tapes, more chalk and masking tape, the compass rose took shape. With the application of blue and white paint, the rose came to vibrant life, right before their very eyes! In the the end these determined pilots left a beautiful and functional work of art, and definite homage to 99s history as well as an open invitation to all pilots to visit the Eastern Slope Regional Airport to "swing your compass!"

Click here for complete details of the project, more photos of the compass rose and a history of airmarking and to see what the Katahdin Wings have worked on during 2008 and earlier. View the calendar at the left for a schedule of Katahdin Wings meetings and other aviation events and safety seminars.
