Hugh Higley, surrounded by his
wife and family, passed away July 12, 2008 after a brief illness.
A member of
AAMYC since 2004, Hugh was a keen yacht racing competitor always finishing at the front of the pack.
He would help new and experienced
sailors alike, on techniques of sailing, racing or boat construction.
As the AAMYC
Soling 1 Meter Fleet Captain for the last 2 years, Hughs leadership guided the group into the most active fleet in the club.
The members of
AAMYC will deeply miss Hugh’s soft humor, great smile and good
sportsmanship at our events.
We pray for his
wife and family at this difficult time.
Below are Hugh’s words and observations from the events he sailed this year. |
June 1, 2008
Hello AAMYC Members;
Today was another interesting day on the pond --- generally good winds
with the exception of the weather mark which was in a wind shadow
caused by a row of trees.
The results are attached as a Fairwind file and then a second for the
Solings. I should mention that we had twelve Solings on the
water today --- and we have thirteen registered for the seasonal
series.
I had a good daily today in the Fairwind fleet ---- but Leroy was the
hands down winner of the 2008 Fairwind Spring Series.
Congratulations to Leroy.

On the 15th of June, the Fairwinds will not have scheduled fleet
racing, but the Solings will. We could start Soling racing
earlier --- but I hate to make changes and goof anyone up as to times
and places. Let me know by return email if you would like to
start racing earlier on the 15th of June ---- if it looks like a lot of
sailors would prefer an earlier (before 2:00pm) start, we will do it.
Also, don't be confused by the Soling results. The current
Sunday results (6/1/08) shows the daily winner using the best five of
the six races sailed today. As you may recall, we have a
winner each Sunday we race. For the season, we will use the
best six of eight Sundays to declare a winner. The throw-outs
will be each sailors two worst Sundays.
I hope everyone had a great day on the water today ---- it was great to
see Jeff Weaver back with the group and we got a taste of how Russ will
be as a Soling skipper as he did a horizon job on the fleet with a
borrowed Soling in the fun races that followed the scored races ---- at
least until the batteries went weak about five feet from the finish
line.
Best Regards,

May 18, 2008 - Dexter, MI
The pond had white caps --- but we sailed anyway!! The Fairwind racing
was the third Sunday in the spring series and once again ---- Leroy was
the winner. Hugh was close behind and Ray Dagenais was a close third.
The Soling's sailed second --- which was the first series of scored
races for the 2008 season. The Solings's will have only one series this
summer and the winner will be the sailor with the low point total for
six of the eight scheduled Sundays. Each Sunday there will be a winner
which is low total with one throw out ---- in other words, the best
five of the six sailed races will be used to declare a Sunday winner.
Hugh finished the day first with Ray Dagenais second and Leroy Payne
third.
Although we had a late start --- as we cussed and discussed whether or
not to sail --- the decision was finally that we would sail starting
about 12:30 and finishing just about on time at 4:00.
Hope to see you at the pond next time.
Best Regards,

May 4, 2008 Report
The club started the 2008 season four weeks ago ---- but some of us are
just getting to the pond for the first time today. It was a
good sailing day marked by interesting winds --- most of the time
steady, but then again, at other times a bit shifty in both direction
and velocity.
The Fairwinds raced in their second set of races of the Spring Series. Congratulations to Leroy --- you have commanding lead !!!!
The Solings took time today to talk boat set-up, rules and
tactics. Then we raced non-scored races. There was
a real good turn out and everyone seemed to enjoy the time we spent both on the shore and on the water ----- and in Russ's case, in the water.
Hope to see you all and more next time.
Best Regards,
Hugh |
