2010 Brass Monkey

The 35th running of the annual Brass Monkey regatta was once again a memorable event. This year's event was held at Crescent Sail Yacht Club on Lake St. Clair and started out with a medium breeze, some good sized waves and some light rain. The rain came and went in short periods during the day and the wind died a bit after lunch. The real story of the day was WEEDS. The straight weeds weren't too bad, but if you got the "hairy monsters" you had big trouble. With a total of 9 skippers competing on a long course, we got in 9 heats. The wind was steady most of the day with only one slight course change necessary. The battle to win was mostly between Wick, Eric and PaulE. With Wick taking a DNF in the first race, PaulE had the lead going into the lunch break. After lunch Wick turned it on and won a couple while PaulE struggled in the lighter air. After some adjustments and some help from weeds PaulE took a couple of wins. Meanwhile Eric, although quite consistent, picked up some weeds as well and took a couple of tough finishes. It all came down to the last race. Everyone stayed out of the weeds, Eric turned it on and edged John O'Dell for the win while PaulE held on to keep Wick behind him for third. The final result for the regatta was a win by PaulE with 3 points over Wick and after Wick threw out his DNF from earlier edged Eric out for second by 4 points. Did I mention lunch? As is the tradition, the Brass Monkey Regatta always includes a fantastic lunch. This year was no disappointment. The main courses were beef tenderloin and pan fried perch fillets. With the usual array of pot luck specialties we all needed a nap afterward. After the racing we all gathered in the tiki hut and handed out the awards-the usual concoction of Brass Monkey cocktail and enjoyed the unusually warm October weather. This was PaulE's 25th Brass Monkey and with the win of the Brass Monkey he also picked up the Boat of the Year honors. With all of that you can imagine there was quite a celebration.
