Welcome to the Evening Star Quilters website...

Founded in 1991, the Evening Star Quilters of Davison, Michigan strive to promote and preserve the art of quilting, patchwork, applique, and related fiber arts.

We sponsor educational activities to encourage the sharing of information and to maintain communications with the support of area quilting organizations.

We like to demonstrate the cultural and historical values of the art of quilting to the community, and to engage in charitable efforts.

About Us...

The Evening Star Quilters have approximately 150 members who pay yearly dues of $30.00, with seniors paying $25.00 a year, and new members are always welcome.

The Evening Star Quilters encourages visits from guests and invites them to take part in two regular meetings free of charge before becoming a member. In the event that a speaker is scheduled during the time of a visit, applicable presentation fees would apply in order to participate. If further attendance is desired thereafter, individuals are welcome to join the guild as a member.

Our meetings are traditionally held on the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Davison-Richfield Senior Center on 10135 Lapeer Road in Davison, with doors opening at 6:00 p.m.

We have a wonderful hospitality group and are a fun, friendly group of individuals who enjoy participating in the following events:
  • 50/50 Drawings
  • Birthday Club Fat Quarters
  • Blotto
  • Charm Squares
  • Monthly Newsletters
  • Monthly Show-N-Tell
  • Quilting Library
  • SafeHouse Charity Donations
  • Workshops and Lectures by Professional Quilt Instructors

Trunk Show: Lessons My Quilts Have Taught Me
Presented by Cathy Kappius

Please join the Evening Star Quilters on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 6:30 p.m., as we welcome Cathy Kappius.

Admission for the trunk show is $5 per person for non-guild members.

After retiring from a hectic and stressful career as a magazine editor, Cathy was inspired by her mother and discovered the joy of quilting. Since her newfound discovery took hold, Cathy has won ribbons at shows, taught at several quilt shops, created her own pattern designs, and has even had two of her quilts featured in McCall's Quilting.

Cathy incorporates a fearless use of color in her quilts and loves every step of the quilt making process. She teaches everything from paper piecing to hand appliqué, traditional piecing, and machine quilting. Her trunk show will focus on color use and will include some published quilts, plus beauties that have hung in quilt shows at Paducah and Chicago.

Quilting and Caring Lecture: The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI)
Presented by Ami Simms

Please join the Evening Star Quilters on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 6:30 p.m., as we welcome Ami Simms.

Admission for the lecture is $5 per person for non-guild members, and all proceeds collected from the evening will benefit the AAQI.

The AAQI is an Internet-driven, grassroots, totally volunteer effort to raise awareness and fund research through art. It was founded in January 2006 by quilter Ami Simms. Her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2001.

More than $157,000 was collected for various chapters of the Alzheimer's Association during 2006 and 2007 by the AAQI. In January 2008, the AAQI became a Michigan nonprofit corporation and will be funding research directly.

The AAQI sponsors two major programs: a traveling exhibit of 52 quilts about Alzheimer's called "Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece" and the "Priority: Alzheimer's Quilt" project which involves the auction or sale of donated quilts no larger than 9" x 12". All profit is used to fund Alzheimer's research.

  NEW Library Policy

The Board has decided to implement a policy for the return of ESQ Guild library books. A stamp to label the inside of the book has been purchased and all books currently in the library will have an Evening Star Quilt Guild label. It is possible that some of the books, that have yet to be returned, do not have this label. If you are unsure if you have returned a book, please check with Cindy Schultz or Joan Lee. To get proper credit for returning a book, please hand it to Cindy or Joan, rather than just laying it on the table and walking away. The new library book policy follows:

A list of Past Due library books was reviewed. Some books have been out since the beginning of this year. The large number of unreturned books caused the board to take the following action to keep books in circulation to other members for check out privileges. Books are due back to the library at the next guild meeting after check-out date. One month’s grace period will be allowed. After two months, a fee will be assessed up to and including replacement cost of books. Habitual abusers will lose library privileges.

It’s a Block Party!!!

New Home Sewing Center of Mount Morris is hosting “block parties” during the first and second week of each month to work on charity quilts.

The first week has get-togethers on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and the second week has get-togethers on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the activities, which begin around 10:00 a.m. and could involve block preparation, quilt-top construction, binding, etc. Otherwise, feel free to bring your own charity quilt projects to work on.

If you have any questions or would like additional details, please contact Sharon Baxendale of New Home Sewing Center at (810) 686-4600.
