Challenges

With so many fun quilting related things to do, why not participate in one or all of the following challenges today?

  • blot•to ('blŏ´tô) n.

(1.) A game of chance similar to bingo - only it’s way better than any game of bingo since it involves quilt blocks. (2.) Periodically, a quilt block pattern will be presented for completion and participants will turn their blocks into the Blotto Committee at a designated meeting. (3.) Participants will place their name into a drawing, with one chance to win for each block submitted, up to three blocks (more blocks may be made and submitted, but there will only be three chances to win). (4.) The Blotto Committee will divide all of the blocks into groups, lay them out, and present the collection for viewing to the guild members. (5.) Winners will be drawn from the names turned in, and the number of blocks won depends on the number of blocks turned in. (6.) Remember, a blotto can’t be won unless there are participants, so be sure to look for the next exciting blotto quilt block pattern below or in a future edition of the Evening Star Quilters Newsletter!!!

  • Passport Round Robin Challenge

Choose 6 people to do a round robin with making a total group of 7. Make a list of the names and phone numbers for each person in your group. Select a completed orphan block from your UFO pile. Place your project in a bag with your name on it and pass it to the name on the list above your name. Do NOT show the project to the owner during the round robin process.

Each participant will be required to:

    • Make a purchase for the Round Robin from a quilt shop each month.
    • Get passport stamped by cashier for all quilt shop purchases each month.
    • Add to the orphan block each month.
    • Get passport stamped by cashier for all quilt shop purchases each month.
    • Pass the Round Robin at the next guild meeting.

Failure to complete your task each month will be noted and a suitable guild task will be assigned for each infraction.

All groups must be established by the November 2008 meeting. Please submit a copy of your group list to Mary Seymour.

    • Put your Orphan Block and passport in a bag with your name on it.
    • Include any information about theme or do’s and don’ts in the first few pages of the passport.
    • Include any additional fabric (optional).
    • Bring the above items to the January 2009 guild meeting.
    • Then, pass your bag every month to the name on your list above your name. If you are the first person on the list, pass your bag every month to the last name on the list.

Prior to the August 2009 Guild meeting, you will total up the purchases of the passport you are holding. You will call or email a designated person the total of your purchases and the name of the person the passport belongs to.

Entries will be returned to the owners and the new top will be revealed to the owner and displayed at the August 2009 meeting.

Entrants will be required to make a purchase for each round robin project from quilt shops. Each participant will be given a passport to circulate with their Round Robin project. The passport must be stamped by the cashier of the quilt shop(s) when you make your purchase.

At the end of the Round Robin, all passports will have entries from quilt shops for February, March, April, May, June, and July. The minimum requirement is to make a purchase from one quilt shop per month, but purchases from several quilt shops each month will also count. If you go to more than one quilt shop, present the passport to the cashier to be stamped. Of all the purchases made from all the quilt shops in one month, at least one item purchased must then be incorporated into the Round Robin Project.

A list of quilt shop information will be provided in each passport. If you do not find a quilt shop listed, please create a page for that shop and have the total spent listed.

  • 2008 SafeHouse Challenge

At the beginning of the 2007 calendar year, the Evening Star Quilters witnessed an undertaking in helping quilters to manage their fabric stashes two blocks at a time, and by all accounts the endeavor seemed very successful. One year later, our affliction is still as strong as ever, but there’s a great deal of comfort in knowing there’s a program available to help us, which ultimately helps others.

Every month, the Evening Star Quilters collect and contribute items to SafeHouse based on a schedule. Quilts are collected during the month of April and October. To foster the effort of collecting quilts for SafeHouse, a challenge known as the “SafeHouse Challenge” was devised.

The “SafeHouse Challenge” will realize its second year and throughout the 2008 year, a monthly challenge will be featured in the Evening Star Quilters Newsletter and on the Web site.

The goal of this challenge is to have each guild member raid their stash for a little bit of fabric to turn into a couple of blocks. Each pair of blocks will be paired up with other guild member’s blocks for an absolutely fabulous and scrappy twin-sized quilt – one that represents the love and generosity that is within each one of us.

The fabric of choice can be any pre-washed cotton fabric odds and ends – even the fabric that brings the question to mind, “Why in the world did I even buy this???” Basic instructions, similar to the instructions that have been previously featured, will be provided to complete two blocks. 2008 SafeHouse Challenge blocks will be made up of a series of squares and rectangles, and the finished block sizes in the quilt will be 12".

Thank you for your consideration with this undertaking, and happy quilting!
