President's Note

Welcome to the Gamma Psi Alumni Webpage!

We welcome all brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi as well as brothers from Alpha Gamma Upsilon to visit this webpage.

Our goal is to allow brothers to:
  • Keep abreast of what's happening with the Gamma Psi Active and Alumni Chapters.
  • Keep in touch with other brothers.
  • View pictures from recent gatherings.
  • Learn more about our Chapter (past, present and future).
  • Have fun!

If you have any comments or questions regarding this webpage, please contact our webmaster .

    Yours Within the Mystic Circle,
    Bob Look

Earlier this year, I was nominated by Tom Venettis for the Evin C Varner Distinguished Service Award. The award is sponsored by Alpha Sigma Phi and its purpose is to recognize certain alumni for service beyond that of the Delta Beta Xi level. The Evin C Varner award is bestowed on only one alumnus each year. I was truly honored to be considered for this award and thought it would be an excellent opportunity to recognize our chapter by bestowing such an honor to one of her members.

Tom shared with me his nomination package and all I can tell you is that Tom assembled one of the finest nomination packages I have ever read. From time to time I have been asked to review the nominations of various alumni for these fraternity awards and from what Tom submitted was truly a professional grade nomination package of the likes that has not been seen before. Tom has surely raised the standard!

Unfortunately, I did not receive the award and it was awarded to an outstanding brother from the University of Washington chapter, Bob Strecker, who I had met on several occasions. Bob is a quality guy and richly deserving of this award.

Regardless, I am truly humbled and honored by Tom’s efforts and I am equally appreciative of the brothers who submitted supporting documentation that Tom included with the nomination package. Those brothers who were involved with Tom’s efforts are:

    • Ted Kocher, Findlay and past president of the Alpha Sigma Phi Educational Foundation,
    • Marty Barker, past president of Alpha Sigma Phi CMU alumni association,
    • Brian Proctor, Grand Valley chapter and current general counsel for Alpha Sigma Phi headquarters
    • James Vanek, UM and past member of Grand Council and headquarters staff
    • Albert Bell, UM and past member of Grand Council and headquarters staff
    • Gamma Psi chapter members:
    • Denny Slavin
    • Paul Fitzpatrick
    • John Morelli
    • Ryan Cousino
    • Undergraduate active chapter president, Brian Czarnecki.

All I ever wanted for our chapter was an acknowledgement (aka, the respect) of who we are and where we came from. Since June 1933, the chapter has initiated over 800 brothers of which approximately 500 members were initiated into the Epsilon chapter of Alpha Gamma Upsilon while another 300 members were initiated into the successor of AGY’s Epsilon chapter, the Gamma Psi chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. We truly are a unique and special chapter and richly deserving of the respect thereof.

Thank you Tom along with the brothers listed above for taking the time to do such a thing. I am truly humbled by your actions.
    Bob

  Gamma Psi Educational Fund Update

The officers of the Gamma Psi Alumni are pleased to announce the formation of the Gamma Psi fund through the Alpha Sigma Phi Educational Foundation. The benefit of having a fund dedicated to our chapter is extremely important for perpetuating our chapter to future generations of Alpha Sigs at Lawrence Tech. Some of you may not be aware of this fact, but the Alpha Sigma Phi Educational Foundation is a 501c(3) entity with assets of app $10 Million. There are approximately 20 chapters that have set up funds or accounts through the Foundation, which are directed to their respective undergraduate chapters. Through the generous donations of several alums, see below, the Gamma Psi fund will soon be established.

Until now, donations from our alums have not gone to the direct benefit of our undergraduate chapter, but have benefited undergrads from all of the Alpha Sig chapters. From 1990 to 2004, Gamma Psi alums have donated appx $13K to the Foundation. Had we had a Gamma Psi fund in place during those years, these same donations could have been directed toward our chapter fund and been used to restart the chapter.

The advantages of having a Gamma Psi fund set up through HQs are:

  • Donations to the fund are tax deductible.
  • The undergraduate chapter receives the benefit of disbursements from this fund, e.g. scholarship, programming costs, travel, etc.
  • Fund loans may be used to purchase chapter housing or can be used for remodeling of the chapter house.
  • The fund is administered by HQs, e.g. adherence to IRS rules, regulations and filings including Sarbanes Oxley matters.
  • And my favorite, in the event the active chapter loses the charter, there will be funds available to pay for reactivation & chartering efforts; e.g. "put a chapter consultant on the ground to restart the chapter".

The following Alums have committed $17,000 for the start up of the Gamma Psi fund - most of us are opting to spread our commitment amount over four years in order to make it affordable:

  • Tom Hansz
  • Tom Weir
  • Brian Judge
  • Denny Slavin
  • Conrad Schwartz
  • Dan Gennaro
  • Al Starks
  • Bill Beitz
  • John Morelli
  • Mike Evans
  • Pete Ziegenfelder
  • Bob Gruszczynski
  • Dave Gurjack
  • Tim Frasier
  • Gary Mallia
  • Jim Vanek, UM
  • Ryan Cousino
  • Bob Look

As Headquarters ramps up their fund raising efforts for 2009, most of you will be contacted for a donation. Here's a chance to direct your donation to our chapter. Many of you will likely find that donating, especially when it benefits our chapter is more preferable. If you are interested in participating in this fund please contact myself, Bob Look (517)788-8963 or Gale Wilkerson, Delta Tau Delta ’66 - President of the Educational Foundation. Gale can be reached on (317.843.1911 ext. 225) Thanks for your support.
