The Hope Herd & Partners
The Hope Herd
Horses For Hope has trained volunteers, certified instructors, and medical staff. Friendly and gentle horses complete the team that provides a safe, educational, and enjoyable experience on the trail or at the barn.
The Hope Herd horses that are selected for these special events are experienced lesson horses. Our horses are special. We choose them for their personality and temperament. We train them to be kind, gentle and willing, which makes them ideal mounts for the beginning rider. We have many horses that provide children with special memories on Chemo Kids Day. Here are two of our special 'Herd':
- Sweet Chardonnay
"Charley" is a 23-year-old Palomino Quarter Horse mare. She is sweet, and all the kids love her because she looks like Barbie's horse. She carries her riders gently and with a motherly air. Charley has shown in 4H shows in lower Michigan and pranced down Main Street in many parades representing Horses For Hope.

- Toby's Rusty Boomer
"Boomer" is one of the newer additions to the Horses For Hope herd. He is a 17-year-old red roan gelding that came to us from Montana. He has a dark (dun) stripe from his forelock, down his back and through his tail. He also has red tiger stripes on his withers and lower legs! Boomer is a gentle boy. He has experience as a 4H western pleasure horse because he is so slow. He loves to follow you around the arena and begs for attention and treats.

- Van & Sons Farm
Horses For Hope is pleased to introduce a new supporter for our program! Van & Sons Farm has graciously offered to host our annual event at their farm in Flushing. The barn houses several horses and has many trails that wind through a nearby apple orchard. We are excited about this new partnership and look forward to their support in the years to come! Van & Sons also offers boarding and riding lesson opportunities.
For additional information on boarding or lessons, visit this Horses For Hope Partner at:
- Project Linus
Project Linus has shared the Chemo Kid Day experience with us since the very beginning. Each year, they provide hand-made child size quilts for the children at Chemo Kid Day. Several local seniors meet every other week at the Flushing Senior Center to make beautiful quilts for children with cancer, soldiers fighting overseas, and women at a local crisis center.
- Sleezy Barb Horsewear
Horses For Hope is pleased to welcome Sleezy Barb Horsewear as a new sponsor of our program. She has partnered with us for prizes for our benefit rides. Sleezy Barb Horsewear provides durable and high quality items for both horse and rider.
- Crossroads Donkey Rescue
Crossroads Donkey Rescue has been a longtime friend of Horses For Hope. Each year, they share their donkeys with us in Cheno Kid Day. In return, we help at their annual Donkey Show each Labor Day weekend. They share a passion for rescuing donkeys all over the Midwest. In 2010, Sissie joined us at Chemo Kid Day as a new volunteer for the hand-led trail rides. You can see her photo on the 'Volunteer Here' page.
