Frequently Asked Questions
What does RICC stand for? RICC stands for Regional Interagency Consumer Committee. There are over 30 RICCs throughout Michigan and they keep the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council informed about issues and needs of people with disabilities. They also support connections at the local level between people with disabilities, their advocates, and the community.
Why is it important to have these connections? People with developmental disabilities have the right to be fully included in their communities--in their places of work and worship, schools, and neighborhoods. Sometimes we need to work with other people to make this happen, and to work to change situations where we are not fully part of community life in Lenawee County.
What is the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council? The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council is a group of Michigan citizens whose mission is "to support people with developmental disabilities to achieve life dreams". It does this through promoting and supporting advocacy, and through grants to groups in Michigan that are helping to achieve this mission in various ways. For more information about the Council, please see our links section.
Where did the Council come from?
Developmental Disabilities Councils in each state are authorized by a federal law, the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000.

How can I get involved?
Come to a RICC meeting! Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 11:30AM-1:00PM in Lenawee County Human Services Building's River Raisin Room.

 Current Lenawee RICC Goals
In May 2007, the RICC held a Town Hall meeting. The goal was to learn, directly from people with disabilities, about what their needs and concerns are. Areas discussed included transportation, education, healthcare, recreation, and more. This meeting was very well-attended and it was clear that there are many issues of concern for people with disabilities in Lenawee county. After the Town Hall meeting, the RICC decided to focus on three areas. These were transportation, health care, and information. In May of 2011, RICC members decided to change its focus to self determination, public policy advocacy, and self advocacy network. The RICC submits a work plan to the Council every year in June. The work plan describes the RICC's goals and objectives for the coming year. (The RICC follows the state of Michigan's fiscal year calendar of Oct. 1-Sept. 30.)

More ways to get involved!
The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council is always looking for people to get involved! While RICCs like ours work mainly on a local level, once a month there is a teleconference where RICC members from all over the state have an opportunity to share ideas, help solve problems, and suggest topics for future meetings. Any RICC member can participate in the teleconference by calling a toll-free number. Council workgroups are made up of people from all over the state and work on specific issues such as housing, transportation, family support, and more. A schedule showing all 2010 Council meetings, workgroup meetings and RICC teleconference dates can be seen here. For more information, please visit our Resources page or contact the DD Council at 517-334-6123.
