Project Linus began in December of 1995 by Karen Loucks of Parker, Colorado. Karen saw an article in Parade Magazine about a little girl who was comforted by a blanket while undergoing chemotherapy. Karen recruited some of her friends and began supplying blankets to children at a local cancer care center. From this beginning, Project Linus has grown tremendously, and has to date delivered at least 3,005,973 blankets nationwide.
In the autumn of 2001, I read about Project Linus in a Barbara Gash article in the Detroit Free Press. Linus sounded like a perfect opportunity for me to use my sewing and organizational skills. When my church agreed to provide support with people, PR, facilities, and a drop off site, I knew we could be a success. Our own chapter began as a "sub-chapter" in September of 2001, then was granted its independent status in April of 2003.
In March of 2008, Beth Collison opened Faith@Work, a very special bookstore and gathering place. This is a NOT-FOR-PROFIT store which benefits Project Linus financially and in other practical ways, including being a storage facility and drop site.
We have garnered over 200 active volunteers, including blanket-makers, "party" helpers, tag-sewers, and 20 VIPs who deliver blankets to the children for us.
We have blanket-making parties at St. Anastasia in Troy every 4 to 6 months. We also have 2 groups of amazing and wonderful women who meet regularly to make blankets. All the rest of our blankies generally come from individual homes or small special events like Scout service projects.
