Homeless Prevention Help

Loaves and Fishes is proud to unveil it's newest service: Homeless Prevention! Starting April 1, 2008, anyone in the Greater Lansing area that is in need of rent assistance can get help from Loaves and Fishes.

How do I get help?
STEP ONE: Go to the Department of Human Services (DHS) and apply for State Emergency Relief (SER). A decision notice is needed before Loaves and Fishes can help. Even if you are denied help through DHS, you may still be eligible for help through Loaves & Fishes.

STEP TWO: Go to Capital Area Community Services or Salvation Army and apply for assistance through one or both of these agencies. If the waiting list for help is longer than 7 days, you may be able to receive help from Loaves and Fishes instead of CACS or Salvation Army. Loaves and Fishes requires proof that you are on the waiting list and that the list is more than 7 days long.

STEP THREE: Complete an application for assistance. You can fax the application to 517-482-6848, mail it to 831 N. Sycamore, Lansing, MI 48906, or turn it in in person.

STEP FOUR: Meet with the advocate at Loaves and Fishes to complete a budget.

What documentation do I need?
  • State ID/Driver's Licence
  • Eviction Notice (if you are applying for first month's rent/security deposit, please complete a Landlord Verification Form.
  • Proof of Income

Is there a co-pay?

Any other eligibility requirements?
  1. The housing (and utilities) cannot be more than 50% of the applicant's total income.
  2. Code compliance must be contacted to ensure applicants will be moving into safe housing.

Can I receive support services?
