Homeless Prevention Help

Loaves and Fishes is proud to unveil it's newest service: Homeless Prevention! Starting April 1, 2008, anyone in the Greater Lansing area that is in need of rent assistance can get help from Loaves and Fishes.

Am I eligible?
To be eligible for the program you must:
  • Be facing a utility shut off for utility help or be homeless for rental help.
  • Have faced a sudden loss of income (an uncontrolled circumstance such as a loss of employment, unforeseen medical expenses, increased fuel costs, etc).
  • Have a reasonable expectation that the household will be able to resume payment the next month.

How do I get help?
STEP ONE: Go to the Department of Human Services (DHS) and apply for State Emergency Relief (SER). A decision notice is needed before Loaves and Fishes can help. Even if you are denied help through DHS, you may still be eligible for help through Loaves & Fishes.

STEP TWO: Go to Capital Area Community Services or Salvation Army and apply for assistance through one or both of these agencies. If the waiting list for help is longer than 7 days, you may be able to receive help from Loaves and Fishes instead of CACS or Salvation Army. Loaves and Fishes requires proof that you are on the waiting list and that the list is more than 7 days long.

STEP THREE: Complete an application for assistance. You can fax the application to 517-482-6848, mail it to 831 N. Sycamore, Lansing, MI 48906, or turn it in in person.

STEP FOUR: Meet with the advocate at Loaves and Fishes to complete a budget.

What documentation do I need?
  • State ID/Driver's License
  • Landlord Verification Form.
  • Proof of Income
  • Shut-off Notice
  • SER Decision Notice
  • Shelter Verification
  • Proof of sudden loss of income (letter from past employer, medical bills, W2s from the past year and this year, etc)

How many times can I be helped by this program?
One time per year.

What is the maximum amount Loaves and Fishes can help me with?
The cap for each type of assistance is $100. The maximum amount that L&F can help each family with is $300 ($100 for 1st month's rent, $100 for Security Deposit, & $100 for utility assistance).

Is there a co-pay?
Yes. Applicants must provide a co-pay of $50 or 10% of the amount due, whichever is the lessor amount.

Any other eligibility requirements?
  1. The housing (and utilities) cannot be more than 50% of the applicant's total income.
  2. Code compliance must be contacted to ensure applicants will be moving into safe housing.

Can I receive support services?
Upon payment, applicants will be given the option of free, follow-up support services for the next six months. These services are not mandatory.
