News
The Mt. Clemens Gem & Lapidary Society has been in existance since 1969. Our purpose is to educate the general public about the lapidary arts and earth sciences.

To accomplish this we conduct an annual Gem and Mineral Show with the Friday of the show weekend being dedicated to schoolchildren from the county.

We also offer a wide range of classes in the lapidary arts. Refer to our calendar below for the current offerings. These classes are open to all. Children over 10 years need education committee and parental approval.

Our general club meetings contain a business portion plus a 1 hour presentation of some aspect of our hobby. This meeting is open to all. If you are curious as to what we are about feel free to visit us for one of our general meetings.

CLASSES! CLASSES! CLASSES!

We also offer a variety of classes in the Lapidary Arts. The classes we offer keep the student in mind. Class space is limited to insure all students get individual attention. Most tools and equipment are provided, this allows a student to give the hobby a "test drive" without a huge cash outlay. Teacher kits provide everything you need to complete your project and extra time is allowed at each class so you may go home with a completed project. All teachers are volunteers, thus insuring lower class fee. Please make sure that you preregister for the class of your choice. Our teachers need to know what supplies will be needed for the class. See the calendar for class dates and times - email the club to find out when a specific class will be offered and fees or check the monthly calendar.

Faceting Classes/Workshops are now offered!! Faceting classes are currently in progress. Please call clubhouse for further information. Faceting is offered EVERY Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Cost per week is $8 with your own machine and $10 with the use of a club machine.

The beading classes we teach include beginning beading, glass bead making, webbed necklace, birthstone/name bracelet, heirloom charm bracelet, beaded ornament, fringe bracelet, caterpillar bracelet and more! You should bring any tools that you have because it is to your advantage to learn using your own tools

In addition, we hope to offer a variety of silver classes including chain making class, silversmithing classes, jewelry repair, PMC (precious metal clay) pendant, introduction to soldering, wire wrapping, spool knitting and freeform silver casting. Check our monthly schedule for the current listings. There will be another of the PMC Classes will be offered after the first of the year. The next PMC class will be in the spring of 2010. You will need to pre-register for this one. I would do it quickly because this class fills up quickly. Other classes include earring/pendant class and fused glass class. Come join us!

Lapidary classes and Workshops: Lapidary 101 - Beginning Lapidary! Limited to 4 students, call to verify availability. Learn to use various machines to create cabochons for jewelry or display. All is provided for you. We instruct on Horizontal Lapidary machines, vertical lapidary machines, slab saws and buffers. Safety on all machines will be taught at the first class. Lapidary workshops are offered on Wednesdays from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm. MUST be a club member, sign a waiver and have taken a lapidary class or been certified by our instructors. Member provides own material and safety equipment. Advanced lapidary classe are to be added in the near future. Please contact Brian Jearlds for other Lapidary dates during the week.

OPEN TORCH WORKSHOP. Will be offered every Tuesday from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Currently this is in a hold position. We hope to get a new instructor soon and again open the workshop. You will need to bring your own equipment but you will have assistance on those projects. MUST be a member of our club, sign a waiver and have taken a silversmithing or glass bead making class. Fee for this workshop is $5. There will be a limited amount of supplies available for you at reasonable prices. Watch the monthly schedue or call the club for current status.

 Explanation of Class Fees
Because our members feel the lapidary arts are SO important, it was decided that we lease a facility to teach our classes and have a place to meet.

Class fees are designed only to pay the lease, insurance and utilities. They include all materials a student will need and most equipment necessary. This eliminates a lot of out of pocket expense. The teachers are ALL VOLUNTEER and are not paid in any way for their service. They teach because they love their hobby and wish to see more people involved in it.
