 Supporting Our Children's Education

The smallest action can make the biggest impact, especially when a community is acting together.

As the 2013-2014 Budget process gets under way for both our state leaders and our own school board, Parent Council will continue to advocate for our schools and empower parents and community members to speak out against school funding cuts and policies that undermine the education of our children.

Advocating for your children can be as easy as sending an email. The "Call to Action" section will give you the information and tools to be an effective voice for your children's education and our community, including tips on corresponding with legislators as well as sample letters.

Standing together to let our lawmakers know that education is our priority we can make a difference, but we first must make a stand.

Sign up for periodic legislative updates and call to actions from Parent Council. By signing up you will know what is happening at the legislative level regarding education budget and policy, what it means for our students, and what we can do as a community to be part of the discussion.

EAA Bills HB6004/SB1358 don’t have the votes to pass in Lame Duck Dear Parents and Community Members, On behalf of the Okemos Parent Council Legislative Committee I want to thank all of you for the calls and letters you made to our state officials and to Lansing State Journal concerning the Education Achievement Authority (EAA) bills. Your hard work paid off!! I wanted to personally thank you for all your work to help us block this misguided legislation. Success required the voices of parents and concerned citizens from all over Michigan joining together to do right by our schools and our children. It does seem strange to call it a victory when you have simply succeeded in stopping bad law, but this truly is a victory: it's the first time in many years that supporters of public education have been able to stop legislation designed to undermine our schools. Unfortunately, this was but one skirmish in a larger struggle. We have no doubt that similar bills on the EAA and on new forms of charters will be introduced again in the new Legislature next year. The "Oxford Foundation" proposal on a la carte education funding will be included in the Governor's budget message next February. Please go to Michigan Parents for Schools http://www.miparentsforschools.org/ to sign up for updates on legislation and to get action alerts. Okemos Parent Council Legislative Committee is working very closely with MIPFS on these issues and they have the infrastructure in place to help our parents get information on the legislation and to help us join our voice with parents throughout the state faster and more effectively. To sign up for action alerts go to http://capwiz.com/miparentsforschools/mlm/signup/. While you are there check out the various articles and resources they provide, I believe you will find the resources useful. Please enjoy your family and friends over the holidays. Then be ready to stand with your fellow parents across the state to stop these other damaging proposals and to join in our call for real and productive steps to help all our children. Happy Holidays! Angela Wilson Chair, Okemos Parent Council Legislative Committee
