Allendale Quilters Guild donated 478 quilts/blankets during 2012 - thanks ladies. A special thanks to one of the guild members who finishes between 15 and 25 blankets per month, Ronica Otto.

Marcia Hadding and the ladies who worked at the Wooden Spool sewing days completed 80 beautiful guilts. Thanks so much to all who helped.

On February 23, 2013, Marcia held a Make A Blanket day. She prepared 100 kits with the help of some friends and got many done!! I'll keep you posted.

DSC_0013b.jpgWelcome to the Ottawa-Kent Chapter of Project Linus!

Project Linus is a non-profit organization with a two-fold mission. First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers”.

Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

Project Linus is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, and is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. Please consult your tax advisor to determine the tax deductibility of your gift.

Students at Northern Hills Middle School once again worked each month to make a total of 125 fleece blankets for kids in Ottawa/Kent Counties. Some of the blanketters are pictured here with the blankets given at an assembly in June. Thanks to all the student blanketters, Mrs. Gottschalk and Mrs. Zuiderveen.

A great big thanks to the Allendale and Hudsonville Girl Scouts for holding Make A Blanket days in February. The kids love the fleece blankets!!

If you want to hold a Make A Blanket day please call me (Vicki Potgeter at 616-895-4457) and I will help in any way I can. Please be sure to cut off ALL selvages before starting to make a fleece blanket. I have lots of good tips for blanket making and for having a successful day.

If you are an organization who needs blankets for children - let us know!!

Preteen - 40" x 60" to 50" x 60"
Teen - 45" x 72" to 60" x 72"

A few blanket-making guidelines to consider:

*Blankets can be quilted, knitted, crocheted, patchwork, tied, embroidered or no-sew fringed fleece. There are great instructions for fleece blankets on the Project Linus national website – www.projectlinus.org – click on the patterns/links tab then scroll down to the “no sew fleece blanket” instructions. As long as it is handmade and washable we can most likely use it for a child in need.

*Remove selvage edges from fleece fabric. For those of you who do not know what the selvage is – it is the two sides of the fabric where the machines held the fabric during the manufacturing process. The selvage usually has the company name and/or lack of the coloring. On fleece it sometimes looks rolled up.

*Please do not add embellishments such as buttons, tassels or sequins to the blankets. These could be chewed off and cause choking.

*Blankets with strong odors of smoke, chemicals or pets cannot be used.

*Please check blankets carefully to remove ALL straight pins before donation.
