Mercy Health Partners Lakeshore Campus ![]() (231) 861-2156 The hospital in Shelby has a long and proud history. In 1922 Agnes Morningstar, a pratical nurse, equipped a couple of rooms for patients. Later, Mrs. Edna Harper joined with her and a hopital arrangement was formed. Mrs. Harper left the organization in 1924, and in 1925 Miss Morningstar passed her interest to the Misses Fannie and Lottie Near. Fannie Near was a graduate of the Women's Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, and Lottie Near a graduate of Hackley Hospital in Muskegon. With the aid of the Fellowship Club, a local group of several thousand persons, formed by a combination of public clubs and private financial interest for the support of the hospital, the Shelby Community Hospital was formed and new building erected. According to the Herald Journal of August 21, 1925, "the building was so nearly ready and all the hospital patients were in such good condition that it was deemed advisable to make the move this week." The patient room furnishings were provided by local churches and organizations, including the local W.C.T.U. In September 1928, the Misses Near felt they could no longer undertake the responsibilities of the hospital, and ownership was taken over by Dr. J.D. Buskirk and Dr. A.R. Hayton of Shelby, and Dr. J.G. Heysett of Ludington. In 1938 the hospital was acquired by the Village of Shelby. Additions were constructed in 1948 and 1964. Equipment was continually updated through fund drives and the hospital auxiliaries. In 1969, with the strong support of the people of the Village of Shelby and the surrounding area, the hospital was again expanded and remodeled, and adopted the name Lakeshore Community Hospital. The present facility was completed in 1972 and further remodeling was done in 1977. In July of 1984 the Village of Shelby transferred hospital ownership to a perpetual, non-profit corporation, governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of nine or more members. In 1996 a partnership was formed with Hackley Health Systems, which included a major renovation and addition to the Hospital, and the name was changed to Hackley Lakeshore Hospital. The Hospital recently became a part of Mercy Health Partners. |
