Fire Damages Century Old Nursery
A historic building on the grounds of Bailey's Nursery in Newport burned Friday night. The building housed catalogs and tractors. Flames shot into the sky for three hours before firefighters got the blaze under control.
The building was built in 1930. It was just part of the nursery's 100-year history in the area.
Surprisingly, the rest of the nursery was spared from the destructive fire, which is good for the owners since in two weeks they will celebrate their 100 year anniversary.
No one was hurt in the fire. Owners do not suspect arson.
State to probe fire at Bailey Nurseries
Investigators from the Minnesota fire marshal Saturday surveyed damage left behind by a massive Friday night fire at Bailey Nurseries in Newport, but hadn't determined a cause, the city's fire chief said.
The blaze at the 1,500-acre nursery, the largest in the state, broke out before 8 p.m. at Bailey and Military roads. Newport firefighters and 11 local fire departments put out the fire by 2 a.m., although it smoldered into Saturday morning, said Fire Chief Mark Mailand. At its peak, flames were reportedly visible more than a mile away.
The fire was contained to a historic storage building, which was across a parking lot from the nursery's main office. The building housed marketing materials and a new printing company started by the nursery, said a spokesman for the nursery, which was established in 1905.
An estimate of the cost of the damage wasn't known Saturday, Mailand said.
